I would like to by a P4 that has a 800mhz Front Side Bus, but is there memory out there that runs at that speed??? If so, where....
Thanks, |

You use PC3200 / DDR 400 with those CPU's and motherboards that support them. The motherboard FSB is set to 200MHz (which is what PC3200 runs at...the DDR - Double Data Rate reads data twice per clock cycle and gives you the 400MHz). The 800MHz speed is the internal CPU bus speed. P4's use Quad Pumped technology where data is read 4 times per clock cycle...so you take the 200MHz motherboard FSB speed and multiply it by four to get the 800MHz internal CPU bus speed.

So in other words....i will be able to get the full use of the 800mhz FSB, once everythings is said and done?
Thanks |

Yes, if you've got an 800mhz processor, DDR400 memory, and a motherboard that supports 800mhz processors.

Ok.. So I asked a question before about motherboards and such and was barraged by people telling me to look at AMD processors rather than Intel.
Here's my question: Does AMD make an 800mhz FSB for a ddr motherboard? Or a processor that has something like HT tech? I haven't been able to find one, which is why I'm asking. |

The AMD Opteron's are available now...they have something called "Hyper-Transport" technology (not sure what that is though), but they're designed to be used in servers. Cricket

Sinner,
I don't have an AMD cpu but to here is what I have. Asus P4P800 P4 2.4c cpu 2Xpc3200 256mb "value ram" 80gig SATA Maxtor HDD This set up I have run up to 2.6+ and it will go to 3.0+ with faster ram. It is something to consider. Carl |

Yes.. They did.
I told them I was debating on different 865PE boards because I didn't think I could afford a 875P (Although.. now, for only $20 bucks.. I might just get the 875), and they told me to look into AMDs. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that I've read shows that AMD is now behind the curve with the Intel 800 mhz FSB, Dual DDR, Serial ATA and HT Tech. That's why I'm wondering.. Ok... I'm not really some great Intel fan. I currently have a 900mhz AMD. But everything I've read says that now AMD is playing catchup. Especially in regard to the Dual 400mhz DDR, and the 800 mhz FSB (which is of huge importance also.. according to everything I've read). I want an 800 mhz (or the fastest) FSB, I want DUAL DDR (unless somebody can point me to something that says something else is better or just as good..), and I want the system to be upgradable to the point that in 2 years.. IF I spend the money, I'll still have a smoking system. Maybe not the BEST POSSIBLE... But one that's damn close, if maxed out. I'm on a tight budget NOW, but I want a system where I can spend my extra 1 or 2 hundred bucks a month to upgrade that will 1) Be able to, and 2) Show marked improvement when I do spend that cash. So I don't want to be limited by the motherboard! There are some p4 boards out there now that are supposedly ready for the p5. That's the kind of board I'm looking at, even if for right now, I'm only getting a 2.4ghz P4C. I want to know that I can still fly 2 years from now. |

The P4P800D and the P4C800 mainboards are *supposed* to offer limited support for Prescott.

ICH5 vs ICH5R?
Yeah, from what I've read its the power sourcing that is preventing current mobos from being compatible with the upcoming Prescott cpus.
I read the Asus comments on two of their boards, and also a couple of Gigabyte boards (that come with their propritary DPS2 module) that are supposed to be able to run the Prescott. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it works out. Any other thoughts on a 865PE vs the 875P? I guess my question now is about the ICH5 vs the ICH5R bridge. The 875P come with the ICH5R. I think a few of the 865pe have the ich5r bridge, but I'm not totally sure.. Do I want the 5r? Are the benefits of the 875 plus the benefits of the 5r worth spending $20? Or should I just forget about, scrap together $20 here and $20 there and spend that cash on more or better DDR ram, or put it towards my next 3d card upgrade or what? Thanks guys, I appreciate all your help and advice! |

This may be slightly off topic, but since we are talking about the P4P800, I am just wondering if you could run a Pentium 4 'B' or 'A' on an 800MHz board. I would like to get this board if it can support the P5 in the future but the current CPU's are too expensive.

I believe you can run any S478 P4 on the P4P800D.

the ICH5R has raid functionality built in, while the ICH5 doesn't. if you're looking to set up a raid array, check that out. and yes, you can run the p4 'A' and 'B' models on the asus p4p800d, along with the new 'C' models. i think support for the pentium 5 is pretty limited right now.

Dustin, is that only on the 800D or the basic 800 as well?

If you mean, can you run an 'A' processor on either the P4P800 or the P4P800D, the answer is yes.
