AMD rig vs INTEL rig

Both these systems do not include any CD/DVD/Floppy drives because I have still not decided what exactly my needs will be and I can get some good deals on these locally. That being said I plan to build two machines, one AMD and one intel that will provide roughly the same performance. These will be used primarily for gaming.

As you can see the prices are almost identical. I did all the research for these during my spare time at work so there may be some serious flaws with them. Please let me know if you guys see any immediate problems with these or if you think I should remove/include any other components in them.

Thanks in advance.

Being mainly an AMD builder, I'd say go with the AMD build.

Here's one suggestion: go withe the athlon 2500+ instead. It gives you the most bang for your buck. Unless of course, you want the 2800 for "status" purposes.

On the Intel build, just so you know, Hypertheading is for multitasking. If you use it just to surf, do email and some gaming, performance will go down as the HT technology will not be utilized.

Other than that, they look to be good, solid systems. It's mainly a matter of preference.

Thanks for your input.

I will look at the 2500+.

I have a couple questions though:

Can you explain the basics of HT technology?

and

Do you think the PSU on the case will be good enough or should I swap that out for a higher quality one?

Thanks

This gives a basic overview of HT: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,107492,00.asp Scroll down to the bottom.

Yes, definately get a good PSU. A 400W antec, sparkle or enermax should do the job.

The 450 watt power supply included with the case should be way more than you probably will ever need. And I would probably go with the AMD ATHLON XP 2500+ "Barton" processor because like force_flow2002 said, it is a better deal.

Your parts lists looks good so far but that's because you haven't listed that many parts yet. Just keep sticking with good name brand stuff with proven history and you'll be fine.

If those Chieftec cases come with Chieftec power supplies, go ahead and use it as they're good quality units.

But if they come with that ISO brand power supply, I'd replace it with something else...like a Fortron Source or HEC.

After reading a few more reviews I think I am more heavily leaning towards AMD. However my question is this: Is the athalon XP 2600 2.08ghz a better proc? Because it is only $9 more than the 2500+ so if it is would it make more sense to buy that one? Im definately getting one of these two and not getting the 2800 however.

Thanks

Also is it worth it to get the A7N8X deluxe over the normal version? I ask this because I can get 30 dollars off my proc if I buy this mobo with the 2500+ and the normal version is already $30 cheaper so I could save $60.

Thanks

The Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08GHz processor is not a "Barton" core processor so it does not have 640KB of cache but only 384KB of cache so basically the 2500+ Barton core processor will probably perform faster and is much cheaper than the 2600+ Thoroughbred processor. Go with the 2500+ Barton core processor.

In most cases I would say it is worth it to purchase the deluxe version because it has more features such as the firewire ports and RAID controllers. But in your case I would go with the normal version because you will save some money. Personally I would recommend going with a Soltek motherboard such as this one below. It is as good or even better than ASUS and you will get more features for a lower price.

The RAID controllers are only for the SATA controllers on the deluxe model.

RAID stands for Random Array of Inexpensive Disks. It is a linkage system of making two or more Hard disks act like one smooth, very fast disk instead of the choppy access of the traditional setup. RAID is a nice feature if you have multiple HDDs.

SATA is Serial ATA for the HDD and motherboard interface. It is a small adapter that plugs into the the HDD and the wire is small and thin, wich connects the mobo and the HDD. You'll have two (or more) connectors on the mobo. You must have a SATA compatible drive to take advantage of the nice speed and convenience.

I am sooo jealous over that memory! That is the BEST memory I hear. Does that Soltek support dual channel? If not, I would try a different board....

Take the Deluxe over the regular A7N8X, it's got some nicer features you'll appreciate down the road. The 6-channel onboard digital sound is very, very, good too.
