No. Just make sure it is jumpered correctly and is detected properly by the BIOS.

Then you can partition and format the HD in XP thro Disk Management.

Also, it can matter how your current drive is setup, meaning is it already divided into partitions? and are you going to partition the second drive into multi partitions?

Thanks. The HD I am installing is a used one which I used for backup on an old m/c and will use it for the same again - it is 20Gb compared to the 80Gb in my new m/c, and I intend setting it as a slave, and may partition it for a second o/s.

I guess I should have been more clear. What I was getting at was if your original first drive has more than one partition, And you have installed programs or the like in the other partitions, then it does matter how you set up the second drive.

For example, lets say drive 1 has two partitions, C & D. Normally it's easiest to keep it that way, so the second drive (also pretending there are two partitions) will now become drives E & F.

However, the other way to set it up will make drive 1 come out as drives C & E, and the second drive will now be drives D & F.

So, when adding a second drive, you first need to determine which way you want to set it up as far as drive letters go...
