effective southbridge cooling

I need to find an effective way to cool my southbridge. I took a northbridge hs off of an old gateway but it is very thin and right now the southbridge is the hottest chip on my board, even with a hs its almost burning my finger. I was looking at the zalman chipset cooler and it looks a lot like the stock northbridge hs on my board so Im thinking about getting one. Any opinions?

You might need an active cooling solution if the southbridge is getting that hot. Try looking around for a Socket 5 or Socket 7 heatsink/fan unit. They're fairly small and should only cost a few bucks. You may need to attach the heatsink to the southbridge with thermal epoxy though or you could try thermal tape...but I'd go with the epoxy.

With a old CPU heatsink with fan on the southbridge chip, it should help to keep the temps way down.

The Southbridge doesn't usually get hot. But, an active cooler may be a good solution as Cricket said. Are you sure your Passive cooler doesn't just need a new coat of Arctic Silver III?

I just put a hs on it using artic silver 3 cause it didnt come with one. The southbridge is often overlooked as far as cooling goes. Even without the hs it was getting extremly hot. However I put a 80mm fan on the side of my case for now and its keeping it nice and cool.

The Zalman ZM-NB32J could be a good solution, if you wanted to go with a permanent solution. IF you needed a fan, you could probably attach a 40mm fan to it. The HS measures 37mmx37mm, so you would have to most likely adapt the fan to fit.
