HD Selector/Jumper Question....
Alright. I have 2 HDs: WD120g 7200rpm Caviar SE and a WD 80g 7200 rpm Caviar SE.
I installed and have been using the 120g for 2 months. I have just now installed the 80g and want to be able to boot off of either one at my choice. So, I am using the www.Nicklock.com HD Selector. However, I'm am having trouble figuring things out. My problem at this point is pretty much: uncertainty! Either selection on the nicklock takes me to my XP on boot up-XP is on the 120g hd. In other words, if I select the blank 80g HD and boot up without any boot disks in--it automatically boots up to XP on the 120g HD. I've tried the following jumper settings: (No jumpers) Single/Single (single jumpers) Cable Select/Cable Select, Master/Master, Slave/Slave, Master/Slave, Slave/Master, Neutral/Neutral (Double jumpers) Dual Master/Dual Master, Dual Slave/Dual Slave, Dual Master/Dual Slave, Dual Slave/Dual Master, Dual Single/Dual Single The 120g is on the Black IDE plug (Master) and the 80g is on the Grey (slave). The Nicklock paperwork states: "If your HD is a WD use another WD and replace the slave jumpers instead." I formatted a G:\ drive on the 80g through the XP on the 120g. My biggest fear at the moment is that if I don't get this right--I will overwrite the XP, etc on my 120g and somehow screw up that 2 months worth of effort. Basically I think its a jumper problem. I am going to go back through the jumper trials and see if I missed something the first time around...... But I would really appreciate it if any of u guys can shed some light on this for me. Here is a link to the nicklock install page: http://www.nicklock.com/docs/install.htm This is my first dual HD, dual Boot setup, so I'm confused. Help! UPDATE: Ok, I got it. Had to go round and round in circles again, but this parts figured out. Single nicklock jumpers:3 & 4 pins Slave/Slave. Either HD will boot up as selected, and both HDs are fully recognized in the BIOS and in Windows--to full capacity also. Dual Slave (double jumpers) only recognizes the 80g at 32g on FAT32. WHEW! What a Pain! Last edited by Naja; 08-09-2003 at 07:33 AM. |
