Opinion on Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop

Hi,

My lessons will begin soon and I was considering buying a laptop.

1) I was looking at a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. And I was wondering how sturdy and strong the casings are of those Inspiron laptops? How well is the inside protected?

2) What brand HDD are build into Dell laptops and are they reliable? Somebody has experience in this field? My dad has an aging Toshiba. His HDD failed within 1,5 years after purchase. He carried that laptop in a special bag with him to work and to all the places he had to go for work. If I would buy this laptop I don't want it to have the same problem in 1,5 years. Any tips or recommendations?

3) What about the sound? If I'd hook it up to a small stereo system, would it give me good sound quality in DVD movies?

4) Those who have have (used) this laptop, what rating would you give it on a scale between 1 and 10 (see the poll)? And what did you use it mainly for? I don't want to make a wrong choice and spend to much on overkill. I would use it for movies and only a little bit for gaming. I think the ATI Mobile Radeon 7500 would suit my needs.

If I choose this laptop I will be buying this laptop in The Netherlands and the price in Euros including shipment would be in my case: 1276.98 euros (incl tax). Got this from the Dutch Dell site.

Every reply would be helpfull

PiC

I've worked with a few Dell laptops and they have always seemed to be quite reliable.

Everything I heard from people is that they really make good laptops and service is very good.

I think I would go with only the 1 year European Collect & Return service. Saves me over 400 euros. Only thing I'm affraid of is the HDD actually. If I'm carefull enough I think I would never heave to return my laptop to Dell. Any suggestions on the service level I should select?

Ow yeah, and another thing. I also looked at the Inspiron 1100. Which gave me the option to select a Celeron in combination with DDR memory. Is this a good combination or should I stick to a P4 and spend a couple of bucks extra? I want my laptop to be fast enough to use it a couple of years offcourse, in a way it works decently with maybe a new OS or something.

Thanks,

PiC
