ok ***. did raid kill my hd?

alright. was running raid 0 on 2 40 gig maxtors and everythings been fine for like a year at least. then all of a sudden one of them dies. it said it was "removed" in some message in bios when it booted.

so i ran maxtors diagnostic stuff and they agreed it was fried and sent me a new one.

got the new one and installed it, then started updatin all my stuff and tryin to rebuild my music collection. then i boot up today and get the error again. havent checked which one has the serial number that it says died, so i dont know if my old one died or second one which was new did.

can raid 0 setup cause hd's to die, or did both my drives just decide to die within a week of each other for no reason? also, have been dealing with a worm or 2, can those kill my hd even if i format them?

No.

RAID 0 or a Virus or Worm would not damage your HDs. A virus may trash your files or BIOS (CIH), but not physically damage your hardware.

If it turns out that it is the other "old" HD that has died, then it is more likely, that if you bought them at the same time, they were part of a "bad" batch. Or perhaps the guy in the shop just dropped the box.

What could cause premature failure of your HDs is overheating in the case or irregular voltage from a faulty PSU.

You should also protect your PC from power cuts, power surges, and lightning strikes by using a UPS, or at the very least, a surge protector.

Also you are witness to what happens in so many raid0 arrays; failure taking everything along the way. Use of a single drive to place the os and data on is common, then raid0 your apps. You'll enjoy the benefits of raid much more.

well, it was my new one that failed.... do you think it could be a bad ata cable? or maybe my mobo has a bad port thing or raid chip died?

I would look into whether a spike from the psu did it. I suspect a psu ruined two maxtors that I had this year.

However, I also thought maybe the maxtors were junk and switched to western digital soon after in a new computer with a different psu.

The reason I think the psu might have been the problem is because it became non-functional, and I had to throw it away.
