fqpissed CD-ROM tray problem

Hi Guys,
My CDRW sometimes opens the tray. I have tried closing it but it opens up again and again. I would have to shut down the comp and restart.

It only seems to happen once or twice a months or two. What do you think is the problem? Do you suggest to send it for servicing. If I am not wrong its still under warranty.
thx

I've never heard of a problem like that. I had a CD-ROM once that would close right after I opened it but never one that opened by itself. It may be a software problem or the drive. You might try to rule out software before sending it in for service.

I would like to say this happens when I am not using the CD-ROM drive at all. It just opens and sits there. Even if I put a cd in it opens up again.

Could it be the ide cable by any chance. I will try swapping with a new one.

But its working fine now. As I have said this happens once in 2 months maybe.

What brand and model of CD-RW is it?

Just as a preventative measure, you may want to scan your PC for Viruses, Trojans, and scumware.

For malware use AD-aware

or Spybot

For Trojans use The Cleaner

How do you have it jumpered and what is it sharing the cable with? You could also try moving the drive to another channel
and playing around with Master/Slave/CS jumpers.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your software.

However, a problem that happens once every two months is very hard to troubleshoot and you might be better living with it rather than tearing your system apart trying to solve it.

There also was a joke program obtainable on the Net at PC Jokes and Pranks Websites, that caused similar behaviour; however, I think it would be happening all the time, if that program were installed.
