I won't ever OC, do I still need fans?

I won't ever OC, do I still need to worry about cooling by way of fans?

Cool

You need at least two. One for the CPU heatsink and a exhaust fan on rear of case at the top. A intake on lower fron wouldn't hurt.

on any somewhat recent pc (from the 800mz + era ) i'd say yes, the cpu fan (very neccesary), rear case fan isnt bad.
Evertything is dependant on the system you are talking about. Ive worked on many late 468's and even early P1's that didnt have a cpu fan, some didnt even have cpu heatsinks in those days.

malek, you should first give the system specs of the system you are talking about or the type of system, and if possible the temps its running now.

Out of curiosity...why won't you OC? At very least you could improve speeds by 5-10% without dire consequences...

I am perfectly happy with the speed and power of my 800 athlon, 256 sdram, 16mb TNT2. However my parent's old computer hit the bucket so I am giving them the Compaq and building my own.

I am of course building a nice computer... but I have no desire to mess with all that overclocking and cooling crap. As long as the game runs smoothly I don't care if the graphics are on the lowest settings with all options off. It makes no difference to me.

I don't think I expect anyone here to understand. Graphics just aren't important to me

Sure we would! "different strokes for different folks" !!! LOL If we all were into the same thing, it sure would be a boring world. And we would not have all the great debates we have.

Nope, there is nothing wrong with being different. Different people want different things from their computers.

Some people race for speed.
Some people strive for better sound.
Some people crave better graphics and video.
Some people desire a cooler case.
Some people prefer good aesthetics (case modding).
Some people just want to check their email.

It’s called a Personal Computer, not a Stereotypical Computer.

Happy building!

That's a very good statement.

For me, I just want my computer to work each time I turn it on...it's a 5 year old PII 400MHz system that has served me well all these years .

Thanks Cricket.

I’m in about the same boat as you. I still have my first build a 750Mhz Athlon T-Bird. Like your PII it has served me well for almost four years. Now it’s struggling with Medal of Honor. So when the Athlon 64s come out on September 23rd there will (hopefully) be the smell of fresh silicon running through my computer room again.
