Hello,
I have just set up a system with the P4P800 delux mobo with ADI AD 1985 on board sound. I am using this with win98 first edition. Does anyone know if there are any drivers or any other way to make the sound work with win98? I've looked aroud the web and found drivers for win98SE thru XP only. I need win98 because I have many programs and some hardware that only works with win98. I'm trying to avoid buying a seperate sound card if possible. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I don't see why the Win98SE drivers wouldn;t work with Win98FE.

upgrade the first edition you have with the second edition.
any program that works with the first will work with the second. you need to install the drivers and other programs from the motherboard cd for everything to work . the first edition does not support usb, you will need the second edition |

Every driver I try to install, including the one included with this mobo tells me "this operating system is not supported by this software". The websites that I've visited tell me that win98 first ed. is not supported. Only SE thru XP.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a sound card than upgrade to win98SE? I've installed everything from the CD that came with the motherboard except, of course, the audio driver in question wich gives me the error mentioned above. Baily, do you, or anyone else on PC Mech have this mobo sound working on 98 FE? If so, how'd you do it? I'm still at a loss here. Hardware on this comp: Asus P4P800 delux mobo, Asus GeForce FX 5200, maxtor 60GB, Windows 98 (build 4.10.1998), 2.4ghz Intel P4 processor, 512MB DDR Ram Last edited by stump; 08-24-2003 at 02:01 AM. |

no I do not even know anyone that is useing w98 fe, it is just too old to support the hardware that is on the M/B, you really need to upgrade to the second edition, everything works just fine with w98se, I have both 98 and xp-pro on my system, dual booting with no problems.

There is no reason why the drivers shouldn't work.... instead of trying to run the program to install the drivers, go to your device manager and select update drivers on your sound card, then browse to the directory on the CD.

Hal, I tried your suggestion & still no go. I got the error message (attached).
I don't know what the difference is between win98fe & 98se. It seems that SE has something that FE does not.

Go figure... dunno what would be so different about it. That leaves your options at either get a different sound card, or upgrade to XP which is 1000x better and deal with what will and won't work under XP.
