Windows installation fails, hardware problem?
Here is the hardware:
Antec Performance Plus 660AMG Asus A7V8X-X AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Thoroughbred Gainward GeForce4 PowerPack! Ultra/650 XP GS Maxtor Diamondmax+9 120GB DMA133 7200RPM FDB Kingston 512MB DDR333 PC-2700 CL2.5 LG CD-RW/DVD Combo The problem: I try to install Windows 2000 Pro for the first time. I always get a BSOD (ntoskrnl.exe) after loading drivers and stuff when the actual Windows 2000 setup exe is starting. If I press F7 at the start of the installation I get a BSOD just before the installation program comes to the part where you select the partition for Windows. The BIOS is the newest version. After trying an older video card (can't remember which) I got a bit further. Selecting a partition and formatting it went ok (I presume, I got no error messages anyway). Installation program starts copying files to the hard drive. Then I get error messages that a certain file couln't be copied to the installation dir. After trying again the file is copied. This happens a couple of times. Then the computer restarts. In addition, the power supply tends to get hot. The case around it is rather warm. I don't know if this is normal. My old Celeron 400 certainly doesn't get hot. At the moment I don't have access to other components, so I can't try different combinations.

Post the error messages you're getting exactly as they appear in the BSOD.

Disable the BIOS anti-virus.

Error messages
These are the different error messages I have received after trying several times. The first two I only got once. The ntoskrnl.exe one I got several times, usually with address 804EEA02.
Address BFD7FA73 base at BFD1A000, DateStamp 38437ed3 - ntfs.sys Address 803A73F2 base at 803A4000, DateStamp 381f8c6e - hal.dll Address 804EEA02 base at 80400000, DateStamp 384d5a76 - ntoskrnl.exe Address 8055A039 base at 80400000, DateStamp 384d5a76 - ntoskrnl.exe In addition to these BSODs, the system has also sometimes restarted automatically or just frozen. Still not working. After trying different components in my computer and testing my own components in different computers I have reached the following conclusion.
The problem seems to be with the processor and the motherboard. The computer worked fine with an Athlon 2400. My own processor worked in an another computer (at a lesser speed. The motherboard didn't support 2.083 ghz). According to AMD the motherboard is compatible. So, it seems that problem is with BIOS settings. They seem to be okay. Can anyone give me the correct settings? |

Just leave the settings at default for the moment.
Download Doc Memory and run it to test your Ram. http://www.simmtester.com/ You say the PSU seems very hot, can you swop in another 300W or 300W+ PSU. A faulty PSU or Ram would explain problems during installation and rebooting. The HSF is properly connected and sitting level on the CPU? |

I would still go for a RAM problem (but I might be wrong), normally I would equate the BSD's that are reported linked to RAM.
It might be an incompatability with the board, although being Kingston I have my reservations, that RAM should be fine, BUT you may have a bad module despite the testing.

No overclocking. Just the default settings of the motherboard at 12.5 x 166 for 2.083 ghz. Using the same processor with a lower frequency (between 1.5 and 1.7 ghz, can't remember the exact figure) I had no problems at all. Windows installed and worked fine. After changing the processor back to the correct frequency Windows freezes. What's going on?

Check the memory settings in bios, the memory should be configured to run at 333 fsb and not 400 fsb.,change the cas to 3 and see if that helps.
Is the OS installed? |

The store I bought the processor from suggested that either the chip was defective from the beginning or I cracked it during installation. Does this sound plausible? I can't check the chip for scratches or cracks before the evening. Which one is more likely especially considering that the chip worked with a lower frequency?
