Need info to read

Where is a good source of information where I can read about setting speeds by using jumpers on the motherboard, as well as setting up the BIOS correctly. The manual that came with the mobo doesn't give much info - I'd like to read up on exactly what I should and should not be setting.

System bluescreened on me and I want to reset the CMOS and start from scratch again. It has never worked right and I'm beginning to think either I set the jumpers wrong, set up the BIOS wrong, or I just have a bad mobo. I have an upgrade W2K disk so I have to install 98 first and then upgrade.

System is from Tiger Direct - barebones kit. XFX KT400-ANB Mach4 mobo, AMD Athlon 2200 processor, nvidia gforce 5200 AGP 8X graphics card (256 MG), 120 GB Seagate HD, 512 DDR, 400W power supply, CD-RW. (I used my old, DVD, Floppy, Zip drive.)

If anyone could direct me to some good info on what BIOS settings to use I'd appreciate it. Mobo supports 266 FSB so I opened both jumpers like it said. Should I set it back to default?

Sorry to hear you're still having problems, Madmom.

Just do a Google search for it, using "BIOS settings". Lots of entries will come up. Just make sure you don't overclock the thing or you will void the warranty.

Here's one of the sites I got in my search:

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/set/

It's funny, I just logged off the pcguide site - I did do a google search and I've been reading the site since! Fairly good info, but it seems a little outdated. They talk mostly about 95 and NT and some of the H/W issues seem a little outdated. But it eased my mind a little. The thing I'm most concerned about is the CPU FSB jumpers on the mobo - the cpu bus is 266 so that's what i set it at, but none of the articles I read seem to suggest setting it that high. Is that just because the articles may be outdated?

Lemme see if I can find it or what happened to it.

Gotta hit the sack now. Will post tomorrow.

If the CPU bus speed is 266MHz, you have to set the motherboard FSB to 133MHz. This is because AMD processors use DDR technology (Double Data Rate)...what that means is data is read twice per clock cycle, essentially doubling the motherboard FSB speed. So if the motherboard FSB speed is 100MHz, the CPU FSB speed is 200MHz. If the motherboard FSB speed is 133MHz, the CPU FSB speed is 266MHz.

That's exactly what I needed to know, and probably why I'm having problems. I'm starting over today. Thanks, Cricket!!
