Can't set higher multiple than 12.5
Hi,
I use a Barton 2800+ on an Asus A7N8X DX Rev.2 mobo with 512mb ddr pc2700. My problem on this new build (done 3 days ago ) is that I can't get it to work on a higher multiple than 12.5 with internal set to 166MHz which gives the normal speed of this cpu : 2084MHz. Now I want to OC that system to see if that 2800 works well... but the only way i found to get it to work at a higher speed is to increase internal to 200MHz with multiple of 12.5 which gave 2300MHz but it didn't run really stable it took more time to open win xp than with it's normal speed of 2084MHz... probably cause my ram is pc2700 and not pc3200? Am I rite? In my bios the multiple menu starts with 13 then 13.5 then 14 then 14.5, 6.5,7/15,7.5,8/16... and ends with 10, 10.5... 12, 12.5. The thing is that the 13 multiple is equal to 5.5 multiple not 13... why is that? And how do I get it to work with higher multiple than 12.5? if I can... And I'd like to know what u guys think of that 2800 is it a good cpu or it's just that normal crapy cpu I should sell...? |

Athlons have locked multipliers, so you can't change it to more than 12.5 without modifying the chip.
if you want to overclock get some PC3200 so you can have the Internal and the External FSB running synchronous.. with good memory you'll be able to puch it higher. you may also want to up the core voltage... but BE CAREFULL if you do and kleep a close eye on those temps. I have a 2800+ and it works great for me.. |

I'm not an overclocker but I'll take a shot at this one.
What brand RAM are you using? For overclocking you need good quality stuff or RAM that is designed for overclocking. Your CPU may be multiplier locked anyway, so the only way to overclock it will be by raising the FSB speed. I think that motherboard allows asymmetrical bus timing so that you can lock the RAM at it's stock speed and only overclock the CPU. My thoughts: The 2800+ Barton is way fast anyway...why overclock it? Cricket

Well I wanted to overclock it to get it working @ 2.8 or 3G... I thought would be nice to see how it was doing @ that speed... just for the fun of it
you know... being the teen that I am I wanna try new things...
