I have in device manager under ports, a com 1 and com 5.
I have rs232 netsign com port validation program that checks communication with the coms. My modem is on com 3 it checks and works fine. Com 1 checks good but it seems as if something is holding it open, when I close the program rs232 after checking com 1 it takes a long time to close out, it does not take a long time to close after checking the other com ports. The bigger problem is that I cannot get com 1 to communicate with the hardware. I have all the latest drivers for the hardware. Oh yea, this problem started when I install a new motherboard, abit KT7. What do I need to do? I did check the bios setting and the serial ports do have assigned addresses. UPDATE:When I remove com 5 in device manager and reboot, on restart windows detects new hardware. Then when I check ports in device manager it shows com 2 and 4. So, it will show 1 and 5 or 2 and 4. Even when I try to use com 2 I have the same problem as listed above. In bios setting onboard serial port 1 is set to 3F8/IRQ4 serial port 2 is set at 2F8/IRQ3 What have I done wrong? Thanks for any help. [Edited by Planenuts on 12-31-2000 at 03:05 PM] |

Uninstall the modem and remove all com ports from device manager. Restart, go into the bios, and disable serial port 2. Ensure that Com 1 is reinstalled by Windows, and then reinstall the modem trying to make it Com 2.

Thanks, I did just as you said, the com1 port and hardware worked great. The modem was installed on com2 but could not open the port. I had to enable serial port 2 to get the modem working on com2, but then the hardware on com1 fails. What now?

I'm assuming you're talking about an internal modem.
It sounds like an IRQ conflict, probably between com1 and com2. Check your ports modem and sound card for IRQ use. You probably have to reassign one of them. |

Here is a list of IRQ’s , yes the modem is internal. I am not sure who makes the modem. It is a modem I had in an old Gateway system and it has a gateway p/n. This is the way they are assigned when the modem works on com2, but com1 won’t.

OK - let's try this again......
Thats a gateway telepath - which is essentially a US Robotics winmodem. Shut the computer down and remove the modem from the machine. Boot into *safe mode* and uninstall the winmodem software, and remove all instances of com ports and modems from device manager. Go into the bios and assign resources manually, setting IRQ 3 to legacy ISA. Reboot a couple of times till everything is seen, and make sure you only wind up with ONE com port - com 1 - and IRQ 3 is free. Then put the modem back in, and install it with a fresh updated driver from gateway. Ensure it goes onto com 2 irq 3 - and you should NOT have a com 2 in device manager - winmodems will create a virtual com port, which needs to be com 2. |

Ok, I won’t have a problem doing that, but what do I need to set the other IRQ’s to?
Also, what will I need to set the DMA’s to? Please keep in mind I am a true computer freshman. It’s like the old saying, I know just enough to be dangerous. If you don’t have time to explain the settings and what they need to be, do you know of a sight I can go to and read? Thank you for helping me. |

The other IRQ's in your BIOS need to stay PnP, don't change any of them in Windows.

That did it! I would like to thank all of you for helping me. I would still like to read up on the bios setting and what they do. The manual that came with the motherboard does not go into great detail. If you guys know where I can go for some reading material I would like to see it. The motherboard is an Abit KT7.
Thank's. |

Fire up your favorite search engine and search for bios tweak. You will find more than you ever wanted to know!
As Xayd said, leave all other IRQ's and all the DMA's plug and play. The reason I had you reserve IRQ 3 for legacy ISA was so plug and play would leave that particular IRQ open for the modem, which is an ISA device. As you can see from your post, the USB controller grabbed IRQ 3 when it was still set to plug and play. |
