How Do I Boot from a Cd on Toshiba 430cdt laptop
Wondered if someone could help me?
I have a Toshiba Sat Pro 430cdt which has been reformatted. I want to put Windows 98 se as the OS. The Bios is 6.5 but does not allow me to boot from the CD.only the HDD or FDD. I have both a floppy drive and a CD drive but can only have one installed at a time. I cant boot from a Bootable Windows CD as it doesnt find the CD...... if I boot from a floppy it stops when it cant find the CD. I guess I boot from the floppy from boot disc with "CD not supported but what do I do next? I have the driver from Toshiba for the cd called TOSCDROM but after install I still cant find the CD rom. Any help would be appreciated. PS I am not that knowledgable but happy to plug away! |

Take a 98 startup disk and copy TOSCDROM.SYS onto it.
Install the floppy drive, boot with the 98 startup disk, choose no CD support. If you haven't already done so, run FDISK, create a primary DOS partition and reboot. NOTE what drive letter is assigned to the ramdrive, this is important (it should be D unless you have multiple partitions on the hard drive). At the A prompt, type: format c: /s (enter) When that's done and you are back to the A prompt, you need to copy some files and create a couple config files. In the following, I'm assuming the ramdrive is D, if it's not, substitute the actual letter for D. Issue the following commands at the A prompt: copy himem.sys c: (enter) copy toscdrom.sys c: (enter) copy d:\mscdex.exe c: (enter) Now, in the following commands, type them exactly, the D in this case does NOT refer to the ramdrive. copy con c:\config.sys (enter) device=himem.sys (enter) dos=high (enter) device=toscdrom.sys /d:mscd001 (enter) Hit ctrl+Z, then enter. It should tell you one file copied and put you back to the A prompt. copy con c:\autoexec.bat (enter) mscdex /d:mscd001 (enter) Hit ctrl+Z, then enter. It should tell you one file copied and put you back to the A prompt. Remove the floppy disk, shut down, and install the CD drive. Boot to the hard drive, you will have CD support (letter should be D but watch the bootscreen to make sure) and wind up at a C prompt. Put the 98 CD in the drive. Assuming the CD is drive D, type the following at the C prompt: d: (enter) cd win98 (enter) setup (enter) Setup should start. |

glc... Thanks for your help and time. It was exactly the type of info I was looking for!
I wondered if you could help again as I am having a bit of trouble copying one of the files The line that reads copy d:\mscdex.exe c: The \ key doesnt seem to work under Dos.. I have found it by pressing the "control " key and the " {" together but when I do this the the line drops down like this copy d:\ mscdex.exe c: When I enter it comes back saying "Illegal option" and then MSCDEX [/E/k/S/v][/D: (Dont know if this assist but when I read the Read me for TOSCDROM it said D:TOSCD001 M:10) Any advice on how I enter copy d:\mscdex.exe c: ........ Thanks |

Try plugging an external keyboard into the PS/2 port.

Glc... Thanks for all your help. Unfornunatley the problem with the \ key was worse than I thought........ but only because of “brain fade !!”. I am using a keyboard with a “british” layout and thought I had tried all of the keys to find the \...... I obviosly hadnt as it is uses the ~ key.
I now have an all singing and dancin Win 98 OS on my computer...... Thanks My next challenge will be to install the Archos pcmcia cd rom which I have as I only borrowed the Toshiba internal Cd from a friend (dont have one of my own). Reading various forums etc on the “archos” ....I know I should be in for a hard time!!!!. but will still try myself (something satisfying when you manage it yourself!!) Thanks |

The first thing you need to do is edit the config.sys on C and rem out the Toshiba driver! The Windows install process should have already remmed out mscdex from the autoexec.bat.
