Texas Instr. Microlaser 600 Pro

Hi Guys,

Got a strange problem.

I have a client for whom I have just done a reinstall of 98SE. She has a Texas Instruments MicroLaser Pro 600, I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers with out a hitch. The printer will not print.

Changed cable and tried all various BIOS port settings, still no print.

When trying to print, 98 is sending the data, but the printer data light remains unlit? the printer will do a self test and print a report. I have tried the HP LaserJet III drivers and still no joy.

Now the printer is some years old, but was working the last time it was used (3 months ago).

Her system is as follows : AMD K62 @ 500mhz, 128Mb PC100, GA 5 -AX motherboard, Ati Rage 128 Pro, 56k Pci modem. 8GB maxtor, Creative 48X CDRom.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you tried sending a print job to it in DOS? Boot to true DOS and send a short text file to it like this:

copy c:\(path)\filename.txt >LPT1

If it still doesn't respond, either the printer port on the mobo is dead or the input of the printer is dead. It's easy enough to try a parallel port addon card to rule out that possibility - and try another printer.

If it does respond to a DOS job, Windows isn't seeing the port right, remove all LPT's in safe mode and reboot. It's possible that the replacement cable and the original cable are both bad.

Best port settings for that old beast are standard or standard bidirectional - EPP and ECP may cause issues.

Should have added that I have done the DOS test still no joy, replacement cable is fine, it's my test cable and I know it is OK.

LPT port on the mobo seems fine, passes all PC Check tests with a loop back plug. Getting to the stage where I am almost convinced, as you suggested that the printers port is at fault. I am gonna take the printer to the workshop and try it on a couple of test rigs.
