DVD Playback problem

Hi all.

I've had an old Samsung SD612 x12 DVD Rom drive for around 3 years. It has recently been difficult to use, stops responding in the middle of playback, and often freezez the application running it. This often happens if I select an item from the menu which is towards the end of the disk. It seems to really struggle reading anything.

Today I received another drive which I got off ebay (supposedly new but I don't beleive that). It is also a Samsung, model SD 616, x16. I put the drive in and it's a bit better, but still has problems. As soon as I select anything from the menu, it skips, and eventually freezes.

What's going on? Am I just unlucky with the drives? Or is there some system setting which may help at all? I'm using either Power DVD or Media Player to play.

My system is Athlon 1.4, 512Mb.

Thanks for any advice!

Samsung opticals aren't that great.... it's probably crapping out on you.

Yep, don't use Samsung optical drives. Get drives from e.g. LiteOn, Pioneer, or LG instead.

I'll add Sony and Toshiba to the "good" list.
