I agree....posting such threads just leads to wars... everyone has their reasons for using their choice and such threads are counter productive. Use the search... better yet, hit the pages like Toms Hardware or Anand Tech and look at the reviews and benchmarks.... for me, its Intel, Pontiac, and frosted mini wheats.

Variety is the spice of life...just might do an Intel build the next time around.

I'm on my 4th AMD, never built an Intel machine. Do whatever makes you feel good.

simply put, they both work great, amd is for cheapsters like me, intel is for rich dudes who like paying more for a product with a few more fancy terms in the description

I have built a few AMD systems and still have an AMD system which runs fine, but I just prefer Intel quality, they run cooler, overclock easier, very dependable and are quieter to cool.

Like RJ and HAL mentioned please do a search first, there are quite a few of these threads around. But if you really want to "know" which is "better". Use them both, and figure out which you like better. AMD and Intel are both good CPUs, it's all personal preference.

Off the cheaper bandwagon already... there's always somebody. Build a mid to top end Intel and it can be done cheaper than the AMD... if you're building on the low end... ya.. the AMD is cheaper, but not by hundreds of dollars anymore either.

As for fancy terms... Intel doesn't have Hyper Transport or Quantispeed or whatever it is.... off that bandwagon too please

AMD, Ford, and Lucky Charms! They are both great processors and you will be happy with whatever you choose.

Cool

If you really want to build a good system you will concern yourself less with AMD or Intel and concentrate more on a quality board, video card and HD's.

Couldn't you have at least posted it as Cyrix vs Intel or Cyrix vs AMD so all of us would have and easy time with the responses and not have to worry about hard feeling between friends.
Next thing that will be posted is how fast a G5 Mac is.

How fast is a G5 Mac compared to a 64 bit Whopper?

No nearly as fast as a BK whopper which kicks the Big Mac's butt.

From my point of view, the people are trying to get off the subject of AMD vs. Intel Debate/war version. whatever... Notice how most of these debates are started by newer members that concern themselves with the processors because for their lifetime, its like "Theres something other than Intel? namely my friends who say "whats amd?"

Ok, let me set something straight, the absolute best processors are Dual 486's, It's what I run my Half Life server on, with a 14.4Kbps connection. I use my Prodigy internet like no other....I also have (2) 800Mb HDD in Raid 0, If you could only imagine the speed...I have a Packard Bell, Pentium 60 as my main computer.....and run my AMD K6 computer as a spare. I like them both...I can only wait for the day when computers will break the 100MHz line....

AMD, Pontiac(gasp!), and Coco puffs!

If nothing else, a roasted Athlon will taste better than a P4.

The AMD 64 bit processor is better.. but be prepared to pay for it not to mention, the current hardware is unproven and in some cases, unsupported until 64 bit software becomes the mainstream. You can go with 64 bit and be their beta tester, or you can go with whats proven and works... at those kinda speeds.. they're all fast.

As a side comment to that... I have to laugh at some of the benchmarks... 257FPS in a game???? your eye sees 60 max.... so saying well this processor makes it do 267FPS... a really stupid comparison when you think about it.

It's always amusing how benchmarks can be used as a proving point when it's in Intel's favor, but how it becomes meaningless when it's in AMD's favor.
The AMD 64 is backward compatible with 32bit,it's the only cpu made that is.
With it's unique memory controller built into the cpu it does offer blistering speed in all 32bit applications and promises even more as 64 bit comes available.
It is comatible with all current hardware,so this isn't an issue.
Finding pc3200 ecc memory may be a problem, but it's specifications are about to be released by jedec.
The price of the 64 is high, but when your the fastest on the block with the future built in...
Will prices drop,probably.
AMD should be praised for producing a very fine cpu, just as they were when the Athlon came out, without the competition AMD offers, the P4 may have never been.
We know it's a good cpu as Intel has about 8 paper launches of what they're going to do.
Microsoft is the one that laid down the law and advised Intel to follow AMD's lead,Intel refused and instead are taking a different lead, offering a 64 bit only cpu with a possible launch of a 64 bit with software support for 32 bit.
Hardware will beat emulation every time.

Sorry Alfie.. but that gave me a great morning laugh... AMD fanatics have done that for years as well. Not to mention I wasn't naming names with my comparison.... was making a statement. You can't honestly tell me that in my statement, you could visually tell me which was which processor.

And paper launch.... same could be said for the FX processor... kinda like the PIII 1.0Ghz... its already been stated, don't expect to find any kinda quantity of them till next year.
