Ok, I am building 2 pcs, my old pc the one where i am taking the HD out of is running winxp upgrade from win98 on an HP. But my question is, since the hd and orignally the win98 is from an hp will this let me upgrade to a new pc? I read somewhere that since the hd was formatted and prepared by hp they made it so it wont run in anything but an hp. A. is this true, and B. will it run in a new PC? My guess is that it wont run in a new pc, and that ill have to reformat (something i wont do) and start the HD over. Alls I want is for it to take the HD boot up, after setting the bios and all, and let me run winxp like its my old pc. Im totally confused, i can buy a new HD but that seems foolish since i have a perfect one right here.

If you have a real Windows 98 disk from Microsoft then you can use it. If you have an HP Recovery disk that contains Windows 98 then I do not believe you can.

you will almost be forced to format the drive and remove everything and buy a new copy of xp to do a clean install.
no you cannot use anything from the old systems unless you do this, the cd's will only work with the old system. but any software ypu got after can be installed to the new system. hope this answered all your questions |

Do you have a restore disk or a full copy of 98?
Same question for the XP disk. |

Hey cool you answered them, and I didnt think what I wrote was written to easily. Anyway, no i have the 98restore disk, which i didnt think would work in the new pc,i have the xp upgrade cd, but thats it. So what i figure is that to use the HD ill need to reformat and then reinstall an os and data, not hard for me cause I have a 120gig secondary drive. So my final question is do I buy a new os, full XP, and then format and install XP? thanks a million.
