Pentium 3 socket size???
How many socket sizes are there for a Pentium 3??? Is there only the socket size 370? I am thinking of changing the processor on my old computer to at least 1.2Ghz because it is only at 750 Mhz right now. Will this work if I change the processor and heatsink or is it not compatible. Oh ya its on a Sony Vaio.

I beleive there are two differant type I can't remember I think there is slot1 and socket 370.
About upgradeing your P3 you have to see if the board will support a 1.2ghz tulatin P3. Your P3 is probaly a coppermine. Your other option is a socket 370 celeron you could probaly get a 1ghz celeron in there. Find out what kind of board is in your computer. |

Pentium III's came in Slot 1 and Socket 370 packages.
First, you need to find out if your motherboard will even accept a faster processor. Most name brand computers won't let you install a faster CPU or it won't let you go much faster than the one you already have. And you probably won't be able to install a Tualatin core CPU into that motherboard anyway, you'll be limited to a Coppermine processor (the cores use different voltages...1.7 and 1.8 for the Coppermine, 1.45 for the Tualatin). The 1.2GHz PIII is a Tualatin processor and your 750MHz PIII is a Coppermine processor. The Coppermine PIII's went up to 1.13GHz, but you probably won't be able to find one. You may be able to get a 1GHz Coppermine, but that's only a 250MHz speed increase, really not worth the trouble. And you may need new RAM as the 750MHz PIII uses the 100MHz FSB and the 1GHz PIII uses the 133MHz FSB...but there were 100MHz 1GHz PIII's available so you might be able to find one...but to get the most of the upgrade, you should move up from the 100MHz FSB to the 133MHz FSB as well as gaining the 250MHz processor speed. There is Slot 1 and Socket 370... then there are (from newest to oldest) Tualatin, Coppermine, and Mendocino cores. You have to make sure that your system will support the core you wish to use. Being that you currently have a 750Mhz, it is for sure a Coppermine, but you will have to be sure that your motherboard supports the lower voltages of a Tualatin before attempting to use one.
