Is the drive defragmented? (I noticed a fragmented drive works alot louder as oppose to a defragmented one)

If it was your hard drive making noise you could be about to lose it. I have noticed that when they get to the end of a life sometimes. Dont want to scare you, but you may want to check into that. Or it just might be the video card causing it to make noise while in use. Probably not, but could be!

With everything that your running in that box, it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade to a 400 watt or above PSU. Plus it's not that expensive...

That's what I have, but I'd look for a 500 watt, might as well. You know you wouldn't have to ever worry about it again.

in my personal opinion, i would not hedge my bets on the psu yet. secondly, there is absolutely no reason to get that large of a psu until you are sure that it is indeed the psu. do you have another psu you could try before spending all that money? 500watts is a bit overkill for what you or most people have

just my 2 cents

No not sure, but when you start modding and using a bunch of different accesories, they tax your PSU. It would be the cheapest thing to replace first, Ya Know. Might be worth a shot. I use that 430 and with just the stuff I use, I notice mine waver a little bit. I don't think you can have enough power. Could be wrong, but like I said the cheapest trouble shooting thing to replace.

here's a 550 watt for like $96 bucks, http://dealcatcher.pricegrabber.com/...120713f2fcf16d

As you go down they only get cheaper.

look, money is kind of a limit here... i am able to sell my 350W for about $30-35USD and i fond an antec 430 for $80. here is the question though, the noise happens with my Radeon 9500 pro, and not as loud, but still way louder then before, my friends Dell ATI Radeon 9700 TX (Non Pro)

Well, you don't really have a choice for now, just hang out and let the chips fall where they may. Hopefully it's nothing serious...

Try running things with the case open for a while. Have yourself and some others try to identify the source of the whine. Sometimes an extra pair of ears helps.

Also, with the case open, you can see if it was a heat buildup causing the SmartPower fan in the PSU to kick up a notch. If it's just heat-related, you might be able to adjust your fans a bit and be just fine.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's the fan on the ATi. On my wife's XP machine, I end up taking off the ATi fan, blowing the dust out, putting a drop of WD-40 in the fan motor, waiting a half hour, then putting it all back in = quiet as a mouse for another few months.
. . . Gary

[p.s. ...nice looking specs on that system. What case did you put it all in?]

[hmm . . one more thing: if you suspect the hard drives at all - why not run the diagnostics on them (Powermax for the Maxtor, DataLifeGuard for the WD)? Can't hurt. Does the noise disappear if you unplug the DVD drive, but leave both HDs connected?]
