Fan Mod

I bought a Thermaltake SMART CASE FAN II. /w Variable Fan Speed Control, now the only problem i have is i was giving a free Vantec NXP-101 Nexus Multi-Function Panel by a friend that owns his own company and resells them under his name.

Only problem is when i hook my cpu fan (The smartfan II) i get a loud beeping noise, i called vantec awhile ago, and they said it's because it has a fan speed controler on there.

How can i mod it so i can completely remove the controler and make it a fan w/o controler so i can hook it up to my nexus panel?

I would buy a whole new fan, but i haven't been able to find a fan like it (orange) that has no fan speed controler on it =(

I have an idea that might work, unplug the temp control sensor and variable fan speed controler, both located on the fan, Then im prettty sure theres a Black Red and Yellow wire going to the 3 pin connector remove the yellow wire and wrap it with electrical tape and try it it might work.

No offense, like to get some confirmation, don't want to ruin a $17 fan (I'm not rich) unless i'm sure it will work

Not sure of FLG's trick, But since Red and Black are the normal wire combos (Pwr and Gnd I belive) Yellow should be the wire to elimnate...

And to completly avoid any hassle

The fans are $9.00

And lighted up orange fans are $3.00

the beeping your getting is from your hardware monitor tha watches the fan speeds, it is detecting a low fan speed, you may be able to reset this to a lower setting, or just plug the fan into a regular power plug so that the speed sensor on the motherboard is not detecting it

Actually, when i listen to it closely it comes from the nexus unit, not the motherboard

Have you disconnected the temp sensor and the fan speed controller from the fan? They just clip into their sockets, and should be easily removable. Disconnect them, and see if it makes a difference.

The yellow wire is just a sensor wire. What you can do is clip it, so it doesn't make contact with the 3-pin power connector. The red and black are all you need for the power to go to the fan. Keep the wire rolled back to the fan chasis, so you can reattach it in the event that you want to use it without the Vantec controller.

What do you mean by "Have you disconnected the temp sensor and the fan speed controller from the fan?"

Also, if i remove the yellow wire from the power connector, then the nexus controler won't be able to read the speeds.

There are two plugs coming out of the side of the fan. They have attachments for the temperature sensor and the manual fan speed controller. Are those two pieces still attached, or are they taken off?
