Flakey USB Ports
Hi everyone!
I built the system below over the summer, but never hooked up any USB devices. Now that I'm back at school, I've been using my camera and MP3 player, and I'm finding that the USB ports almost never work at all. My MP3 player maintains a connection until I try transferring, then it acts as if I unplugged the player. Three or four seconds later, it reconnects. Also, I use the MS Scanner and Camera wizard to transfer pics off of my Nikon camera, and now it usually just gets to the window that says "reading information" or whatever and just sits there forever. Every once in a blue moon it goes to the next screen, and then my pics transfer fine. Both the player and the camera use the same standard USB to mini-USB cable, so I use the same cable in the same port for both of them. It's not the cable, I tried the camera and the cable on a friend's comp and it worked perfectly. Also, these aren't case USB ports that I've wired in; these are straight on the motherboard. Both devices are USB 1, but the ports are USB 2 compatible too. But then again, so were my friends' that I used it on, and I know USB is legacy compatible. What could be the problem? N. Walker (Oh, also, I have my MS Intellimouse USB plugged in on one of the ports and it works just fine.) |

there are some cases for devices where if the port is usb 2 a usb 1 device will not work or work properly.
you seemed to have already proven the usb ports work fine so you may wanna check out the other devices on other computers if you can get access to any. |

My buddy's USB ports are USB 2 also, and the camera worked fine.

Please do this.. Go to your Hardware profile and assure you have the right USB controller and USB driver... for that particular controller. USB 2 will support any USB pheriphrial, so that is not the problem. Also check your cables and invest in some nice BELKIN USB 2 cables.. If that dont work.. make sure you have the latest drivers for your camera installed.
