cooling question
I have recently purchased a new computer, with an amd athlon xp 2800+, and I realize that these higher processors run warmer than slower processors, but I dont like the temperature that it gets to... right now surfing the web it is at 145F/63C. I was hoping to find a cooler that is reasonably priced that will bring my processor down to around 90F but i'm not sure that is even possible... Give me some solutions, I would be willing to spend more if I knew that it is a reliable solution and will not hurt anything...

For a HS/F the ThermalTake Silent Boost (~25 if you shop around) seems to be quiet, and quite effective aswell. Are you using a 'name brand' computer? Changing the Hs/Fan may void your warranty if so... Is there good venitlation near the computer? That may be bringing up your temps, say if the PC is in a closed cabinet...

First thing to do is run the computer with the case sides off. If the CPU temp drops a lot, you have to improve your case cooling...install some case fans and clean up the wiring.
If the CPU temp doesn't drop, the heatsink is probably installed wrong. It should be sitting nice and level on the CPU die. Recessed part of the heatsink should be over the raised part of the socket. Metal clip should make contact with the heatsink directly over the CPU die. If the heatsink is installed properly and your case cooling is set up right, they take a look at heatsinks the come with a 80mm fan on them. The SpeezeFalconRock is a good heatsink.  Cricket

I have tried running the case open, no difference in temps. I have checked my current heatsink and it is seated properly. I built this system and the case it is in has 2 large outtake fans, I dont know what the cfm is on them but I think they are 120mm fans. Do you have any suggestions to bring my temperature down?

What kind of ambient room temperatures do you have? If the room is hot, there's isn't much you can do to bring those temps down.
Are you sure the heatsink is installed properly? 63C seems a little high. Did you install the heatsink or did someone else install it? I ordered a motherboard with CPU and RAM installed and tested from MWave 3 years ago and the heatsink wasn't installed properly. Started up the computer and the CPU idle temps were in the high 50's C. Checked the heatsink and saw that it wasn't seated properly. Removed and reinstalled the heatsink and temps dropped down to the low 40's C. Cricket

the room is cool, and I am 100 percent positive that it is installed right, I have done it myself 2 times to make sure.

Only thing else to try then is to use a better heatsink. Take a look at the Speeze FalconRock.

Not quite as effective as one would imagine, and the prices on them are much more expenisive than the falconrock hs/fan...

I have not been able to find any places that have used that falconrock on a 2800+, any ideas of where I can find a test like this, and where I can buy it, possibly in my area, springield illinois.

Here is what I did...
I was having slightly high CPU temps also so I purchased one Sunon 120mm Intake fan and a Vantec Tornado for teh exhaust, i want to get teh hot air out as quickly as possible. What else i did was when i originally installed my heatsink was I used a cheap thermal compund called "Dynex" and it really is nto good. I bought Artic silver and WOW amazing difference. Just make sure you clean off the old thermal compund with rubbing alcohocl. |
