pros and cons of combo drives

I would like a list of the pros and cons of having a combo cd/rw dvd rom drive rather than a seprate cd/rw drive and dvd rom drive. thanks for eveyones generous help.

Having two drives allows one to be the source drive while copying a cd. Otherwise, I really don't see any major disadvantages to having a combo drive. HTH

I went to the extream on that.
I have one of each.
cdrw
dvdrw
cdr
dvdr
all set as master on the motherboard
and a promise controler card for my 3 hard drives

and I realy like it set up that way

works great too

Pros: Money savings, use only one drive bay and IDE connector.

Cons: Puts all your eggs in one basket (if it fails you can't do anything), you can't copy cd's on the fly.

please correct me if i'm wrong,
if i have a DVD ROM & DVD rw i can play and burn cd too?
if the answer is yes, is it neccassry to have the CD ROM & CDrw?

No, you don't need the CD-ROM and CD-RW since the DVD drive can also read CD's and the DVD burner can also burn CD-R's (at least most can...it may depend on which DVD burner you get).

I'm getting a Pioneer DVR A06, what's ur opinion on that particular model. Do i still need another dvd rom if i need to make copies as Floppyman stated?Is there any other method/ways to make copies besides having the second drive?

Yes, if you copy to hard drive image first. For the $32 a DVD drive is a good investment.

If you ever have to copy cd's and dvd's its nice to have 2 drives 1 dvd/cdrom and the other is your combo drive.

Well each drive will often run if you leave a CDROM or DVD inside it. Two drives means you are going to use more electricity and it might even make the startup time for your PC Longer. If you dont use a drive all the time it can also become a giant dust magnet.

No my card is a Sapphire Non pro has same heatsink that would come on most 9800pro.
