it seams that the dvd- is becomming the most popular right now
just be aware that it may not be compatable in all dvd players

dvd - and dvd + are two differant types of formatt.

I recently saw a report on DVD burners on Tech TV a couple of weeks ago, the big debate between -r or +r is going to take a long time to come to a solution or there is a possibility that it might never come to a solution. It really makes no difference if you buy a -r or +r burner, for most standalone DVD players will play either one. However, I would suggest getting a dual (-r/+r) DVD burner that way you will be cover pretty well, Sony, Plextor and other companies are making dual DVD buners.

Aww, forget about dual format, that's not what you should be concerned about. Actually + is al you need.. . .

.. but the real important thing now is the dual layer. Most video dvds are dual layer and you can't copy them 1:1 with *any* current burner.

But the dual layer DVD+R burners are coming, they'd be available by end of this year or beginning of next year. I'd definitely wait for one of them.

Even when dual layers DVD burners come out, I would wait for the dust to settle. For two reasons, usually the price will be high on them and when any new technology there will be bugs that need to iron out.

You can make backup copies with single layer dvd burners, usually on one or two disks, all you have to do is take out all the extra features and menus - DVDXCopy will do this automatically for you.
