help install second HD on A7v333
Hi everyone,
i have a western digital 80 gig installed on my asus a7v333 mobo booting windows xp no problem. i just scavenged my girlfriend's 15gig hard drive from her old compaq box. I want to install this hard drive as a second hard drive on my system so that I can get all of the data off of it. I have the new hd plugged into the ide slot and the power source but my system doesn't recognize it. Anybody help me sort through this? her hard drive is off a Presario Compaq 5bw130 -- i don't have the manual for it and suspect that i need to know the jumper settings. haven't found this info on google so far. her hard drive was booting windows 98se no prob on her system, and i did swap it for my drive and it booted 98se on my system no problem (though it had no drivers for anything so i never actually got it to the desktop and running). so her hard drive is working fine but I just can't set it up as a second hard drive on my system. Thanks! -- rd |

What's the brand and model of the drive? That's how you find jumper settings, not from Compaq.
Try temporarily disconnecting whatever drives you have on your secondary IDE (I assume you have your optical drives there) and connect it to the end connector on that cable. That's your best shot without knowing jumper settings. |

i didn't see any model number on the hard drive, just a bar code, but i will check again.
i will also replace it with the cdrw drive and see if that works. thanks -- will |

ok, so upon inspecting more carefully i've discovered that the jumper settings are printed on the hard drive...
and now I have it up and running on the same cable as my boot drive (after changing the boot drive's jumpers). i think i may lose performance on my drive this way, though, but no matter. thanks glc! i swear pcmech rocks my world... -- rd |

You will not lose performance if you use an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable and cable select jumpering instead of master/slave.
