Foldin' For PCMech!
|
i ask this question before, but i have a different idea this time. i wanted to know if it would be worth the oney to build a dual cpu computer. i was told for a desktop pc its not worth the money, but i will be setting up a home network of about 4-5 computers. i want them to be hooked to a server, but i don't want to build or buy a server. could i build a dualie to serve as both a server and my personal desktop?
i want a monster of a computer, and this way i think i could do it and still have it function. what do u think? is it worth the money?

if you installed a O/S that supported dual cpu's and used them in a server application, then yes, anything else, no

No it would not be worth it if you just want a new computer. A 2.6Ghz P4 or Barton 2500+ will be enough for anything you want to do, just add aboot 2Gb of ram and it will perform like a dual processor comp. Ram is more valuable than processor speed.

A dual is fine for most anything, but you will seldom get the best use out of it unless you do things that stress the cpu(s).
If your apps are multithreaded you will see benefit from duals. If not, you will have smoother performance anyway, as duals multitask far better than any single cpu sys. As a file server, a single cpu, even a slow one, (say 450 or so) would do fine, the disks and the network would be the limitation on performance. So, in the end, a dual is an awesome workstation. As a server, if you was say, google, then duals would be a good idea. Get the idea? |

ok, one other reason i want a dualie. braging rights among my friends. i'm only 16 (almost 17) and still in high school. i was one of the first to get a cd burner. when i got it, it was the fastest u could buy (16x10x40) and now i'm on a slow 466MHz computer with an old slow burner and slow dial-up. all my friends are getting new and better stuff and i just want a computer that will be around awhile.
i'll price the dualie i want and post it on here in a few days. you people will think i'm crazy all the stuff i want on it! lol I whine too much! |

You're going to learn an expensive lesson. You're going to spend huge dollars on dually and your buddies will get a single processor at a higher clock rate for less than you're paying and spank you around the block as chances are, the software you'll run won't be dual capabable and only run on one processor anyway.

Bragging rights would be about all that you would get. Even with a server it is not all that necessary unless you have some processor intensive apps like SQL queries or you are rendering some huge video files. Plus the MB for Dual CPU's are much more expensive and often times don't fit well in some cases. You would be better off with a hyperthreading P4 with the 800Mhz bus. You would be better off in bragging rights in hooking it up to a nice case with a nice monitor. It would look faster that way.
