Old box into web server
Hey guys, I'm new here so cut me some slack and let me know if I break any rules or anything like that.
I have an old box that I would like to turn into a web server that contains: -2 gig HD -256 MB ram -3Com 3c509b ethernet card -250W psu -basic 1.44 floppy -generic cd-rom -redhat 9 OS 1st question: what mobo and cpu would be best suited for this configuration? Do you think I would be able to find an old pair somewhere because as you can see it doesn't have to be very demanding? 2nd question: One thing I wasn't able to find out when learning how to do this is whether or not memory is very important in a basic web server. Is the amount I have sufficient or should I be looking to pick up some more? 3rd question: I bought the etherlink card specifically for this build and am wondering if it will be compatible with redhat 9? When I first started planning this I was gonna go with a win2k install but decided I'd give a linux OS a go. It's my first time using linux so I'm not at all familiar. |

1: Sure, old mobo that seems to work. Intel, ASUS or ABIT would be preferable if you can afford to use.
2: Depends on your audience. If the site will serve ~10 a day from local people, 256mb should be enough. >30ppl, try 512MB. >70ppl, try 1GB. Of course, always, more mem, more merrier. 3: Not sure. Check 3Com site. Check RH site. Check google: http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...+card+%2Blinux ppl seem to be haivng probs. 4th Question: What connection are you using? Most home cable/dsl aren't allowed to host web servers. |

Thanks for the reply.
Any advice on a specific mobo cpu combo? The site (or sites) will basically be for personal use only. Access will be granted to close friends and family and that's about it which is why I don't want to go through the hassel of using provider. I checked and my ISP does allow me to have my own server as long as I dont end up "turning it into an ebay" in their words. I have a static DSL line running into a SMC barricade router. EDIT: just thought I should mention. I'm just building this for the experience and I don't plan on it being very useful. I just want to be able to access somethings online when I'm travelling and dont want to use those gotomypc type deals. Also, I'm saving the crazy hardware for the terrabyte file server I have planned... *wink wink* Last edited by LouiCypher; 11-27-2003 at 02:01 AM. |

Any old PII 350 and up, with the BX chipset on the mobo will be cheap and reliable. If you want a little faster, there are loads of Intel 810E and 815 mobos (think most any socket 370 cpu will fit these) with onboard everything, all you would have to add is ram and drives plus case and whatnot. I prefer Intel for servers, unless you go AMD cpu on AMD chipset mobo.
When RH9 installs, you get the options to select what kind of computer you would like it to be, server, whatever... kinda nice that way. |

Ebay has an OEM Intel VC820 Slot 1 ATX Motherboard W/Sound compatible with PII 350's for 38.00. If I put in an intel 815 chipset, would this do the trick?
Also, that was one of the main reasons I went with redhat. |

Sure, it should.
about HDD, is it 2GB HDD or >2GB HDD with 2GB www space? you do want to stay with 7200RPM drives for hosting. Last edited by BearEater; 11-27-2003 at 02:30 AM. |

Shoot, I had no idea. It's only 5200. Is this gonna be a problem?

hum...it may sustain, but as you know, 40GB HDD cost like $40. if you feel rich, go ahead and purchase one, but 5400RPM drive shouldn't be that big of a problem.
Don't forget to set firewalls in RH. f34r the h4x0rz. ![]() edit: 1&1 company is giving away 500MB space, 5GB bandwidth hosting free for 3 years...to U.S and Can, as promotion for their entry to N.American market. they are the biggest in Europe, and reputable. "f34r the h4x0rz"
I have no idea what that means. I've never used linux before. But now I'm wondering... wouldn't the hardware firewall in my router suffice? and thanks for the heads-up on 1&1, I'll check it out. |
