Foldin' For PCMech!
|
ok, i know there are a bunch of threads like this one, but this is really making me mad! i have windows 98 on my old HP Desktop. i was given a free 7GB HDD so i installed it and there was some data on it, no need to FDISK. i formated the drive and it worked fine. i downloaded a bunch of files (setup files) on to it. then instead of downloading all the files again onto my other computer, i thought i could simply put the second (7 GB) HDD into the second machine and install the programs that way. faster and easier, right?
HA! WRONG!!!! the HDD didn't show up on the computer. so i changed the slave and master setting a bit, and nothing! so i put it back into the first computer and again it wasn't seen! so now the HDD isn't seen by either computer! why?? i even tried to do FDISK and it wont let me parion it. can someone hepl me??? EDIT: one other thing i noticed, the amber colored light i call it the "working" light. its the light that flashes when you open a large program or when the HDD or CPU is working hard. anyway its always lit now, like it doesn't flash or anything its always on, but when i take the second HDD out it goes off.

I'd say the drive has died - is it seen by the bios on POST?
If it *is* seen, run diagnostics on it. |

ok here is a little more info. the drive is hooked up to the secondary IDE, set to slave with a cd burner set as master.
uhhh you can use the same power cord on a HDD as on a cd-rom drive, right?? i just thought of that. the second HDD is a lot warmer than the primary one. the primary HDD power wire had HDD on it, the secondary one has P5 on it. i hope this doesn't matter. maybe thats why it doesn't work. |

If that's a proprietary computer, the power supply might be too weak to run 2 drives. The power plug labeling should make no difference but try a different one.

well i thought of that too, but i had a cd burner and cd rom drive hooked up to it for about a year and a half without any problems. but HDDs require more power than a cdrom, right?
i was reading some other threads on similar issues and people were saying about a second HDD not showing up in BIOS. mine doesn't show up. |

Double check your cables and jumpers. Try using Cable Select instead of master/slave.
