Onboard RAID controllers
I installed a DVD-RW drive to my box a few days ago. However to do so i had to remove the CD-RW drive so i could put the DVD-RW in it's place along with the DVD-ROM drive that was already there and have the whole thing in a master/slave config. However if i want to put my CD-RW drive back into my box, what would happen if i connect it to one of the onbord RAID controllers? I have a feeling this is kinda a dumb question, but i just wanna know.
My motherboard is an Intel LAD845PEBT2V1. And also to be sure the RAID controllers are the 2 slots on the motherboard that are blue and fit a regualr IDE cable, right? I know they are not PCI, they are onboard. Also in thoery if i ever did deciede i use RAID 0+1 sometime in the future.....i would connect the 4 hard drives to the 2 raid slots and they would be like 2 regular IDE channels with a master/slave config for each HD, right? Also what else would have to be done after that? I read the artical about it and i just wanna know if i understood properly. I know some of these questions sound like nonsence, but since i'm farely new to hardware, but trying to learn more i dont wanna screw anything up. |

CD drives do not generally work well on raid controllers. Put your hd[s] on the raid controllers and put all of your cd drives on the ide 1 and 2. This can be done either after you load os or during the install.
If it is onboard, it must be enabled in the bios. Have the driver for the controller handy. After you restart windows, it will find the new hw [the controller] load the driver. Shut down and restart. Shut down again and connect your hd to the raid controller. Note you may have to select scsi/raid as boot device in the bios. |

In case you are wondering, the raid controller can support a non raid hd.

Ah ha, never thought of that...
I have WinXP so then it should just then detect the RAID controller right away. Also would the harddrive drive letter change here bcuz of this and/or would i possibly get any data loss or or data curruptions on the HD because of the switch of the HD from the IDE channel to the RAID controller? |
