An older PC I have will no longer boot. In fact it will no longer make noise. Well, no noise other than the click when you press the power switch.
So I followed some of the instructions in tech tips regarding system testing. I did not remove the MB from the case, nor did I unplug all the cards, as the system worked with all that stuff before. But I did unplug all the drives & removed all but one memory stick. I unpluged some of the other junk too, like HD LED, reset switch, speaker & power switch. Then tried jumping the two power leads on the MB with a screwdriver. Still got nothin. Is there a way to test the powersupply independently? How about without a special tool (I do have a multimeter, but cannot purchase a power supply tester at this time)? TIA for all help. |

Yes; sorry. It is an ATX power supply. If by digital vom, you mean is the multimeter digital, yes it is. can do ohms, ac volts, dc volts and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand.

ok then try this:
remove everything from the mother board and leave the cpu installed and hooked up normaly, leave all the fan connected. turn on and listen for the fans to run. in they don't run, unplug the power supply cord that connects to the 120 volts in the rear, leave off for 1 minute and reconnect any fans run ? if not no need to go any further as the supply is dead. if the fans run, then post back here and we can go to the next step. |

No fans run. The three that could run are: power supply fan & two CPU fans (its a dual cpu intel board). Just to confirm: are you saying that 1 or more of these 3 should run, or were you referring to other fans that a person might have? At this time the only thing connected to the PSU is the MB.
Thanks |

all connect fans should ,even the one in the power supply
check the outlet to be sure there is power there and if you have a power strip check the circut breaker and that there is power there Last edited by bailey; 12-11-2003 at 10:15 AM. |

Again, bailey- thanks much. I now have an overpriced low quality comp-usa power supply that works & a tester that confirms the other one don't.
