New CD-R R/W problem

I had a Lite on 48x24x48 CDR-R/W and a Generic DVD player on my computer. The jumpers were set to cable select and the CD was the first device on the flat wire and the DVD was the second. I downloaded some ISO's images of Linux's sysytems with The CD burner and most of them worked fine.

They had a good sale on Lite-on 52x32x52 CDR R/Ws so I bought one and installed it on my system removing the 48x24x48 drive. I left the jumpers as cable select but switched the Drives so the DVD is now the second device and the CD is the first.

Since doing this, none of the Linux systems I DL'ed work. They all hang up on the install, around the point of hardware dectection, though it seems to read the most devices. It hangs up on install even if I try to install from the DVD. I was able to use the DVD to install before..

Is this problem associated with the different speeds of the CD's or is something else going on.

I also noticed that on one or two attempts to install from the DVD the point when it hangs up, the Floppy drive green light stays on.

Did you mean to say that the DVD is now FIRST and the CDRW SECOND? Also you are referring to the jumbers on the back of the drives, right? If you are, then since you switched the drives, you also have to change the jumpers. If I understood it correctly, with the DVD being first, it should be cable select. ( I hope I don't have that mixed up, if I do, please correct me)

Or you could just switch them back to the CDRW being first and save some trouble

The Jumpers on the back of the Drives were set to cable select, as opposed to master and slave, both before and after the new drive was installed. What I changed was the loctation of the drives on the Flat wire going to the IDE plug. On the old drive set up the DVD went to the Black plug (primary) and the CD-R R/W to the Gray plug (secondary). On the new set up the CD-R R/W is now on the Black primary Plug and the DVD is on the Gray secondary plug. The jumpers though are still cable select. The Bios sees Drives set up the way I described when I checked.

If the floppy light stays on, that's likely a miscabled floppy drive. If it's definitely cabled properly, try disconnecting the floppy and shut it off in the bios as a test.

I have two liteon rewriters on one ide channel, i have a 52 33 52 as the master and a liteon 40 12 48 as the slave.
I then have the dvd as the slave on ide one and a Maxster 160 gig as the master.
Liteons like to be master and can be very funny if they are not on the end of the cable.
Ive had a few problems with the drive not reading till i made it master and put it on the end of the cable.
My system works ok with 3 cd rom drives and four hard drives.
If you get the drives sorted out and the light stay on on the floppie ? change the cable around on the floppie and the light should go off.

The Lite-on is on the end of the cable now, though jumpered as cable select, and that's when the problem started. When the lite on was second on the cable all was fine. I read somewhere that when two opitcal drives are on the same cable, the most technologically advanced one should be first, and CDR R/W's are the more advanced. That is why I switched them when putting in the new Lite-on. I didin't feel like bothering before, but since I had to take the old one out anyway, I thought I'd switch them.

Are lite on's parculiar about being jumped as cable select? Maybe I should jump it as Master and Slave? Or perhaps switch them back in the old configuration?

I just wanted to be sure that my problem was not related to the fact that the Linuxs OS's were not working because they were written to a slower CD-R then they are being used on now. I thought the CD-R would compensate for that but I wasn't sure.

The strange thing about the floppy drive is that I didn't touch anything on the floppy cables or wires when Changing the drives. The floppy is not even in the way. I was thinking that the reason the light may be on is because that is the point where the OS sytem is getting hung up. It doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes when trying to load the OS.

Switched the jumpers on the rear of the Drives from cable select to master for the CD-R R/W and slave for the DVD and the problem seems to have been fixed. I got the Linux operating system that I wanted to load installed anyway. I haven't tested it with the other systems that were given me trouble.

The liteon cd rom hated being a slave on my computer and wouldant read any disk ? but i made it master and all is well.
