P4 heatsink

i just got a new mobo and i went to install it today, but the heatsink from the old one will not fit on the new one. its in a Dell, and the way its setup, the fan is built into the case so i don't need a new cpu fan, just the heatsink. can i buy just the heatsink or do i have to buy the fan too? or it there a way to make my heatsink fit on the new mobo? thanks

EDIT: what would be a good heatsink? i don't know how much they cost, but i don't really want to sped more than like $10-$15 on one if i can help it. thanks

If the new motherboard is not from Dell you will need to change the Power supply also as using a dell PSU on an aftermarket board will burnup the new one due to Dell wiring the motherboard connector different than the standard ATX spec.

The MOBO and PS in most Dell's are wired differntly. The Dell that I owned would not accept a standard P4 CPU. Ther was no place to attach the standard heatsink and fan to the MOBO.

If you already had it hooked up then it is ok since any damage would be instant.

Does the DELL power supply have the square 4 pin 12v power connector? You'll need that for the aftermarket motherboard. If the DELL PSU doesn't have it, you'll have to get a new power supply. Make sure you get a good quality one.

lil Jimmie:

"Here ya go."

That linked to Newegg to a refurbished original Intel CPU fan.

That brings up an issue I'm trying to get some info on too.

I'm getting a P4 2.6c to overclock to 250 FSB or so on an Asus P4c800-E deluxe mobo.

That'll get me up in the 3.25 Ghz range ideally, with the Geil Ultra Series Dual Channel 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-4000.

Will the packaged Intel heatsink and fan that comes with the CPU (and that you linked above as a good replacement) take care of my cooling needs?

I'm putting this into an Antec Performance Series II Mid Tower Case With 350W Power Supply, Model:SX835II with at least 4 fans working (2 front, 2 rear) for general case cooling.

Also, would it make any sense for me to get a separate: "Zalman ZM-NB32J Northbridge Chipset Cooling Kit,Include-1 Heat Sink & 1 Thermal Grease & 2 Thermal Adhesives,Retail", or does the heatsink that comes with the Asus do the job?

Thanks for your input.

It should. Overclocking by raising the FSB doesn't raise CPU temps that much. It's when you raise the vcore voltage that you'll see temps go up dramatically. But you shouldn't raise the vcore on a P4 anyway...you don't want to get the dreaded "sudden death syndrome".

Intel chipsets don't run very hot, you should be fine.

Thanks Cricket! Even if it runs a little hot, I'm hoping the 2 fans up front and the 2 (+PSU) in back will keep a good cool flow of air through the box.

If I start to see funky stuff, I'll look into some other cooling solutions.
