Question Router Connection

Not sure if I am in the right forum, and if not, please accept my appology. I have just reformatted my one computer that is running windows 98, it has been on my home networking before and no problem. This is not the main machine where it is hooked up to, but one that it runs off of. I for some reason, can't get the internet going on it. I use cable, and have modem with four port router. All is working except this one computer that I just reformatted. Usually, it just comes up normally, but this time cannot locate that it is on the internet. Is there anyone there that can tell me how to fix this problem. I forgot how to ping it to see if the connection is going through. Please help if you can. Hopefully, I gave enough info to do so, if not please let me know what else I need to do this. Thanks ahead of time for any help, anyone has.

first did you make sure that it is set to be in tha same work group
second can you see the other computers in the network or can they see you

ping 127.0.0.1 to verify that the nic is working
ping 198.168.1.1.1 to see if it sees the router
if any of thes dont work , double check your settingd for the nic and the correct protocals are installed

how do you ping again, I forgot as it has been so long? Sorry, I'm kind of dumbfounded.

Once I do this, if it doesn't ping, what would be my next step? Going to work on it first thing in the morning, as my son is sleeping and it is his computer. Thanks, again!

Send a message via MSN to QuickSilver
most routers will actually be 192.168.2.1, at least from what I have seen anyway.

I tried pinging, and it is not recognizing the main computer. What do I do next? Anyone know? The other computers hooked to the home network, I am having no problems with.
