Question

I have built the PC, formatted and loaded win98se and many other programs. Now I have my old PC operating under win95 with lots and lots of info., files and different programs that I really hate to lose.

Is there a program out there for the transfer from one to the other, or does the different OS make it impossible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Hi asiagirl,

You can transfer files between the computers, but transfering the programs is hard because each program creats entries in the registry and start menu and other places, and it is almost impossible to copy those exact settings over. The best way is to just reinstall the software on the new PC and copy over the files. And by files I mean hones you have created yourself (Word documents, images, etc.)

Hope that helps.

If you have a lot of personal files, you can hook the old hard drive in your new computer and just use Windows Explorer to move the files to your new computer. But it won't work for moving programs.

You can also use Direct Cable Connection in Windows to hook the 2 computers together with a "laplink" cable and transfer them that way. This will not work for programs, but it is great for files, without the hassle of removing and hooking up hard drives.

You can try this, either through networking, a laplink cable, or by removing the hard drive to temporarily slave it to the new system, boot to Windows and open a DOS window. Using the XCOPY command, copy everything from the old drive to the new drive. When prompted to overwrite existing files, answer NO. While not a perfect method, many of your transferred programs may still function without re-installing them.
