power supply check

just got a new aluminum 600w power supply for my new system. because i am still waiting to a few components to arrive i can't really start doing much. i plugged in the power supply by itself but neither one of the fans came on, when i connected a dvd-rom nothing happened again. does this mean that the power supply is deffective or does it work only when connected to the mobo?

An ATX power supply needs two things to work, a momentary close on two of the ATX connector terminals (Usually supplied by the Power button on the case which passes through the motherboard) and a load since you can damage the power supply by running it without a load.
Just wait until you get everything together before you run the PSU otherwise you may be looking to buy another PSU.
Only about .25% of the stuff I have used over the last few years has been dead on delivery.
Again Just wait till you get everything and then put it together and run it right. And remember you need an installed Heatsink and Fan unit to run the CPU!

Yeah, 600W is more than overkill. What are the specs of this beast?

What brand is this 600W PSU?

I would say get rid of that PSU. I found this page with your PSU for under $30. That doesn't exactly scream quality. Look at an Enlight, Sparkle or Enermax at around 350W (if you want some more options, check out this thread).

Vantecs are good units, but I read a review which said that a particular model (can't remember which) was noisey.

been reading a lot from people having problems due to unsufficient wattage of psu and was thinking if i'll add on more stuff why don't just go with more watts. u r right 600w is too much.
With power supplies, the amount of watts isn't as important as the quality of the power going to the system. A cheap power supply won't be able to send clean, stable power to the system...the power will more than likely fluctuate or ripple and it's this "dirty" power that causes stability problems. A good quality power supply will send "clean" or very steady power to the system and this helps with stability.

So basically, a good quality 300 watt PSU more often than not will outperform a poor quality 600 watt PSU.
