power supply check
just got a new aluminum 600w power supply for my new system. because i am still waiting to a few components to arrive i can't really start doing much. i plugged in the power supply by itself but neither one of the fans came on, when i connected a dvd-rom nothing happened again. does this mean that the power supply is deffective or does it work only when connected to the mobo?

An ATX power supply needs two things to work, a momentary close on two of the ATX connector terminals (Usually supplied by the Power button on the case which passes through the motherboard) and a load since you can damage the power supply by running it without a load.
Just wait until you get everything together before you run the PSU otherwise you may be looking to buy another PSU. Only about .25% of the stuff I have used over the last few years has been dead on delivery. Again Just wait till you get everything and then put it together and run it right. And remember you need an installed Heatsink and Fan unit to run the CPU! |

Yeah, 600W is more than overkill. What are the specs of this beast?
What brand is this 600W PSU? |

I would say get rid of that PSU. I found this page with your PSU for under $30. That doesn't exactly scream quality. Look at an Enlight, Sparkle or Enermax at around 350W (if you want some more options, check out this thread).

thanks bigandy for the helpful links. i've been browsing some psu's on zipzoomfly website cause im very happy with the stuff i ordered before and found this one: vantec stealth 420w click thishref"http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=270030"
been reading a lot from people having problems due to unsufficient wattage of psu and was thinking if i'll add on more stuff why don't just go with more watts. u r right 600w is too much my cpu looks kinda cheap - got it off ebay. let me know what you think of vantec. another cool thing - they have 3 yr warranty. thanks |

Vantecs are good units, but I read a review which said that a particular model (can't remember which) was noisey.

So basically, a good quality 300 watt PSU more often than not will outperform a poor quality 600 watt PSU. Cricket
