Though I do not know from experience, the Sony Trinitron I have heard is to be okay. I have never really seen a bad monitor, unless it is old or too small. Usually, you are safe with name brands.
For cheap prices you could of course use Pricewatch, but I would use uBid.com, a place that sells new, old, and refurbished computer parts. I found a Compaq QVision 21" Monitor for about $400. If you get in at the right time, you can get an amazing deal. Respectfully, Demosthenes |

Sony makes an awesome monitor, especially the FD Trinitrons, but expect to pay about $400 for a 19". KDS also makes a 19" using the same tube, and I saw it for about $399 at Best Buy this weekend. But, if you aren't looking for a perfectly flat screen, I picked up a KDS 19" for $199 at Office Depot Monday. It was $299 with $100 rebate, good deal, and it looks sharp. The colors are good, and it supports a 1600x1200 @ 75Hz resolution.

Take a look at http://www.ubid.com at the refurbs they have at auction. They usually have Sonys and Mitsubishi's which is what I have. I got a Diamond Pro 900u for about $350 and it at the time was a $600 to $650 monitor. Be careful what you bid because the shipping can be pretty steep. You can get a steal if you are patient. Also watch the warranties and get one with at least a full 90 days or more from the original manufacturer. I have bought a bunch of their monitors and only had to return one because they shipped the wrong model and I made them pay the return shipping.

I have recently purchased a Samsung 955df for a client and will order one shorly for myself. They are much more resonably priced ($300). This is a new price with a full 3yr warranty. Many sites seem to carry it. I recommend searching for "955df" at http://shopper.cnet.com. This shows updated daily prices sites have as well as shipping costs and availibilty. It also ranks the sites with a merchants review. This monitor looks great, has awesome color and a "true flat" screen. It also has a neat pop-out tray for on screen controls. I'd seriously take a look at this monitor before making a decision. Here's a link so you can see the specs: http://www.samsungmonitor.com/html/955df.html
Hope this helps. I'll also mention I bought mine from Page Computer that listed its price on the cnet link above and they extended the warranty to 3.5yrs. This monitor has great clarity with a .20mm dot pitch! [Edited by pardegt on 02-02-2001 at 01:38 AM]

Like everything else, the price of monitors is dropping rapidly. I thought getting my 19" Radius (same as a KDS) for $419 was a deal!
I don't recommend getting anything with less than a .25 dot pitch for a 19" monitor. Most of the cheapies will try to slide a .27 on you. Horrible pix. There is a Futura brand (by Viewsonic) for $200 on Pricewatch. My brother has one and it seems fairly decent! |

The KDS monitors are great if you have a bad one. They have an exchange program where they send you out a new one to replace the other. Tech support is not real great because they would as soon replace it as talk to you. You do have to pay return shipping as you do most places.

Personal Opinion Really get something with a tolerable dot pitch. Personally I love my NEC FE950. It ran about 400 5 months ago so it's prolly around 300 now

You're video card is going to have a lot to do with how the screen looks. But I guess these days, there are no "bad" video cards, but there are some that are definitely better than others.
