Second HDD

I was wondering how you install a second hdd, what software does it need to work?

Needs no software. What version of Windows? How large is the drive? What motherboard model?

I am currently running XP, it is 160GB, the mobo is a DFI NFII Ultra-AL

What brand of HD? Retail Maxtors come with a CD that configures the system automatically to recognize HDs over 134GB. The CD also works well with WD HDs from my experience.

XP with SP1 installed see's drives over 134G and no added software is needed. I'm not familar with your board and cannot speak to the BIOS limitation issue if there is one.

I would install it and if the board see's it and you have SP1 installed, you will be OK.

If not we can take it from there.

How did you install?

Normally in later model systems it would be set to Cable Select and put on middle connector to be used as a slave drive if using the Primary IDE. If using the Secondary IDE connector it could be set to either Master or slave if paried to a optical using a 40 wire cable or again as Cable Select if using 80 wire cable.

If paried with another drive, either the Primary or Secondary IDE you need to ensure that if Master/Slave jumpering is used that it isn't conflicting with a existing drive.

For example; If you set it to Master on Secondary and are using 80 wire cable with the optical on end connector you would have a conflict.

Can you elobrate a little? How exactly, is it installed. By that, I mean;

Which IDE?
What type cable?
How jumpered?
What is on cable with drive?
How is that device jumpered?

It's in the main IDE port, not sure what cable, it's a slave drive, on the same cable as my master HD which is set as master. Basically, I just did a fresh install of windows, and so there is nothing on the system except XP.

Right click My Computer, choose Manage, select Disk Management. Does it show up there?

I am currently running a maxtor 40gb hdd, but need to get the new one up asap. The MoBo bios reads the new hdd as being 33822MB, and windows itself doesn't recognise the disk at all.

Sounds like you have the 32gb jumper set. Use the very top diagram in that document.

You should be using 80 wire cables and cable select on BOTH drives, blue to motherboard, black at the other end to master (the original drive) and gray in the middle to the new drive (slave).

If it's seen properly in the bios - probably as 149 gigs or so, it will show up in Disk Manager as unallocated space, just right click on it and create a partition/format it and its ready to go.

You MUST install SP1 on XP before you can do this, thats the only way to break the 137gb barrier.

Many thanks to GLC, the 32gb Jumper was set... I didn't install the HDD so didn't ever see the jumper set up.

To format the 40gb, you would have to reinstall XP. Here might be a problem - if your copy of XP doesn't have SP1, you may have problems seeing the 160 after you are done. I'd disconnect the 160 to do the reinstall, and reapply SP1 before you reconnect it.
