Angry Cooling fan sounds like a cricket

We just bought a new Gateway which is awesome except the cooling fan sounds like a cricket living in the cpu. They sent us a new fan but it sounds just the same. HELP!!!!!!

Welcome to PCMech, superhearing

Are you sure it's the fan and not the HDD or CD drive?

Guess it's the fan then

Which fan is it? CPU fan, rear fan, or PSU fan?

Can you see if the fan blades are scraping against anything?

Gee, how'd I get in there in the first place?

Try loosening the screws that's holding down the fan. Maybe the plastic fan body is warping causing the blades to hit something.

Good one, Cricket. Well, the fan blades aren't scraping against anything, I really think it's the motor in the fan. When I press against the motor to make it stop rotating, the noise stops. We're going to buy a new fan today and see if it's any different.

By the way, it is the rear cooling fan.

It's a case fan? I'd still try to loosen the screws. I had a fan making funny noises in a cheap case once. When I loosened the screws a bit (on a suggestion by a co-worker), the noise went away. Seems the case was warped and installing the fan straightened the case a bit, but that put some stress on the fan body. Loosening the screws let the case ease up on the fan body and the noise went away.
