big slowdown connecting 2 pcs to 1 ide cable

Hi

Ive recently bought a deskstar 80gb 7200 rpm ata 100 hdd .
the problem is put this in my comp as a slave to my maxtor fireball 7200 rpm ultra ata 133 hdd ive notised a big decrease in system performance and lots off slowdown, what should i do.

I read another thread about some1 saying put them on cable select but i read on another forum you cant just use a normal 80 wire 29 pin ata cable you need a 80 wire 28 pin ata cable.

Or should i get a pci ultra ata card and put my deskstar as master on ide 1 and my cd/dvd writers on ultra ata card.

Or is there any other way off putting these 2 hdd in my comp without the decrease in performance.

Thx

Marc

What kind of cable do you have and how are the drives jumpered?? Do you have that new drive partitioned and formated??
You probably already have an 80 wire ATA cable that should work fine, and you actually do want to jumper each drive for cable select and have your new one to the center connector, and be sure the blue end is going into the motherboard...

OK, but how are they jumpered??? Try cable select cause that is the way it is designed to be on the 80 wire ata.. It almost sounds like you have something not quite correctly installed cause there should be no noticable performance difference just cause you added a second harddrive.. Do you have the slave drive partitioned and formatted??? Can U access the slave drive and read and write data to it??? The things I would be sure to do are to jumper both drives to cable select, partition and format the new drive, and if you have win9x, go into device manager click on properties for the harddrives and enable DMA...

Sometimes different brand hard drives don't like to be on the same cable with each other. Get another 80 wire cable and put the new drive on the secondary, slave your optical drives to the hard drives. Definitely use Cable Select.

I know I've always found the jumpers to be be confusing on those IBM drives, so be sure you don't have something jumpered that perhaps shouldn't be on that drive..

Hi Again

This is how i configured my hdd ive put them both on cable select and on the same ide cable but im confused on how to partiion the slave drive.

Do i have to make it into a logical drive and make it a extended partition or can i put a o/s on it and just have it as a primary drive with making it a logical and extended partition drive or even though it has a /os on it do i still have to make it a logical and extended partition.

Im interested in doing it your way glc but using seperate ide cables for the hdd do cable select evry drive even the cd/dvd roms and how do setup the secondary drive do i need to have a o/s on it or can i just partition it and thats it

Thx

Let's back up - what do you want to use the second drive for? If all you want is extra storage, you don't install an OS on it. I'd make the whole thing an extended partition, and break it up into logical drives as desired. What version of Windows do you have?

Yes, if you use 80 wire cables, every drive uses CS.

Im using xp pro and just im gonna use it for storing data

my comp just froze twice there i never had this problem before do you think its cos the 2 drives are on the same ide cable.

ive heard ppl talking about nforce 2 sw drivers causing problems with ide drives ive just put my dvd burner in this comp and its froze twice i was using record max now when it froze both times.

the thing is i never had problems before with nforce sw drivers but its ebver since i put 2 hdd and the pioneer 106 in the comp its starting to freeze
what do you think is the most likely cause

Thx

XP is simple - just go into Disk Management and partition/format the new drive and it's ready to go.

I'd slave the Lite-On to the primary hard drive and the Pioneer to the secondary, 80 wire on both, CS. Enable DMA on all 4.
