Bad HDD causes immediate shutdown
Hi,
When I turn on my PC, it powers up for about half a secod and just shut down the power. Then when I press the power button, there is no response. I have to unplug the cord turn off and on the power switch located at the back of the case. Then PC powers up for half a second again. I searched this site and found a similar problem, the suggestion is to unplug one of the HDD (my PC has 2 HDD's) and try. I unplug the secondary HDD, then the PC runs normally. Now when I want to use the secondary HDD, I have to turn on with 2nd HDD unplugged, then I need to plug 2nd HDD manually when the PC's booting. Is there any suggestion which might be able to fix this problem? Thank you, goo-dru PS. I forgot the mension. The HDD which causes problem is Hitachi 120GB ATA100 (I think). I will check the model if anybody want it. |

If you unplug and/or plug in a hard drive when there's power on the machine, you wil VERY soon be dealing with more problems than what you have right now.
Either that hard drive is defective or you have a weak power supply. |

goo-dru, i would say that since it's shutting down so close to startup, that you can try just running it with the one you think is bad connected. this will further testing glc's thought that it might be an underpowered PSU, if it runs for a decent length of time with the second (possibly bad) hd connected, then you know it's having two hd's that is overpowering your PSU. If it still shuts off, then you know your hd is bad.

If you're plugging in the drive while the computer is booting, does it boot normally?
Does the system and OS work normally? As stated, doing this may lead to problems and is an ill advised practice, however asyou've already done it,the above questions may be pertinent. What type of ribbon are you using?(80 or 40 wire) Had the system worked before and then this problem arose or had you recently added another hard drive? How are the drives jumpered? Have you run any diagnostic software on the drives? Have you tried another power connector? |

Hi,
Thank you both for the input. The power supply is 550 watts at max by OKIA (model : OKIA-550 ATX). I think it's not the power supply. Right now I'm running PC with one HDD and has no problem. I did more testing and the problem happens only when 2nd HDD is connected. And I'll surely stop plug/unplug when it's powered. Thanks again, goo-dru |

To Alfie,
When I plug 2nd HDD during the booting, it does boot normally. And everything else work fine. The problem is caused only when I turn on the power when 2nd HDD is connected. What type of ribbon are you using?(80 or 40 wire) I honestly don't know how to distinguish that. It's a ribbon with the blue end, and the blue end is connected to the mother board. Also it has 2 more connections for HDD's. It has the pink lines at the side. Had the system worked before and then this problem arose or had you recently added another hard drive? When I installed 2nd HDD, everything was fine. When I moved the whole PC to test cable connection (I didn't have a router at the time, so I had to move the whole PC to place it close to the line.), it happened. How are the drives jumpered? 1st HDD = primary, 2nd HDD = secondary. Again when I turn on the power with 2nd HDD connected, it shuts down just like that after half a second. Only 1st HDD is connected, it is fine just detecting 1st HDD. When I plug/unplug during the booting, both HDD are detected fine.is problem. Have you run any diagnostic software on the drives? I just have check error and defragment by Windows XP. I did both for the both HDD's. The programs went through and didn't seem to detect the source of the problem. Have you tried another power connector? Actually no. |
