Compaq PSU, Different From the rest

Can someone please let me now why Compaq make all there products different from the rest, this is my dilema I got a pioneer 106 DVR, and since I installed it in my compaq presario the cpu & exaust fans have failed to work, and the outcome of this is that I cant play games because my PC just over heats a crashes then I have to wait 15 mins to let it cool down, I opened my PC up to visibley inspect the fans on reboot and they did not move, so I removed them for testing, when I tested they were working, I was thinking that my new DVD drive was taking all the juice away from the fans, my PSU is 240w but not sure if thats enough, so I went out and bought a new 300w PSU, but once I stripped out the old one I noticed that the new one was to small, and when I took it back into the PC shop the owner told me that I would, 1.either have to buy a 300w PSU from compaq, I was told that this was the most expenisve option, or 2. buy a new empty case for £25 and strip the guts out of my compaq and rebuild it in the new case, but with the size of the compaqs products I'm not to sure, so I done a search for a compaq PSU 300w new or reconditioned, but every search I done only turned up PSUs at about £80 to £150, and that price is just to much for me, after all the PSU that I bought from the PC shop only cost me £ 17, I would really appriecate, someones experianced opinion, please, and if anybody nows of any othe product that is compatible with the compaq presario 6240EA, thx,

Thats problem with prebuilts, they have limited upgrade capalbilites. I would save all the drives(hard drives, dvd roms, cdrw etc.) and buy a new motheboard and case.

Supposedly, it is to guarantee that the quality of the replacement parts come up to Compaq's reliability standards. But you are probably smart enough to figure out another reason.
My take: If you sell enough machines, you can get custom manufactured parts as cheaply as generic, and forever afterwards you will reap the rewards of the extra money you can make from parts sales of those special parts.
You computer store owner gave you good information. I'm not sure that particular model will strip down to fit a different case, but it just may.
The DVD shouln't take that much more power than the CD, and shouldn't cause a fan problem. You may have a bad DVD.

@ edfair, when u say that I might have a bad dvd, the only problem I have had is that it has stopped my fans from spinning indicating power loss somewere, and I have already had it in the slot with a few successfull burns from it so I dont think that it is the drive itself, probably get the new case and take the guts out of the compaq and if the mobo dont fit the new case then all I will need to get next will be a new mobo for my amd 1.8ghz, I have been browsing the compaq site and just for a replacement PSU 240w is £65 P&P, when the one I bought today 300w=£17, but as per this post it doesnt fit, so if anyone that has still to read this post and now off any compatible products i.e PSU 300w this would help me greatly, thx neill
