I have a computer in my basement that when i put an additional hard-drive in it it doesnt recognize it. How do i get it to recognize the drive? I have tried everything that i know to do. it is a pentium 1 @ 144mhz and 64MB of memory. I think it is from 1997 Gwsmyda Last edited by gwsmyda; 02-06-2004 at 02:56 PM. |

Is it recognized in the BIOS?
Have you tried partitioning and formatting it?

First thing I would do is check the jumpers on the drive. If the PC is that old, it probably has 40-wire cables. The new drive, if you are putting it on the same IDE cable as the dirve you had in there before, should be jumpered as slave. If it is on its own channel, it should be set to master.

How large is the drive? A P1 will most likely have an 8gb limit.

try resetting the bios to auto on both drive's on the pri. ide, set both hard drive jumper setting's to cs, and put the drive you want as c-drive on the end of the ide cable. once it's reconized by your bios and in my computer. then format and c if it work's. sometimes i have luck doing it that way, and other time's i don't like glc say's it might not reconize all of the hard drive capicty. good luck. c-ya sling

Thanks, all of you, but now i have another problem...
I have an 80MB (yes, MB, from 1991) HDD that I need to recover the data form. When I plug it in it doesnt load. But thenI remembered what doctorgonzo and sling said, but realized that there was no jumpers on the drive (were multiple drives even invented back then?) Its running 3.1 and i doubt that it can support any CD-RW out there. Is there any way i can view the info and burn it? Using the computer that i mentioned above? Or do I have to put all of the files on 50~or so Floppies? Last edited by gwsmyda; 02-07-2004 at 10:28 PM. |

hello gwsmyda. try hooking your main hard drive (c-drive) onto the the primary ide cable and set the jumper setting's as master, then take the other hard drive, set it to master (or if there are no jumper's) install it in the sec. ide cable and set your cd-rom up as a slave , if the cd-rom is on your sec. ide cable. i have an old gateway 2000 puter that has 2 hard drives.both don't have jumper settin's and one is on the pri. and the other is on the sec. ide cable and the cd-rom is set to slave on the sec. ide cable. and as long as the bios pickes up the 2nd hard drive and it's listed on my computer it should be able to b read it. and if this work's ya should be able to drop and drag the info to your good hard drive (c-drive) good luck c-ya sling

Note that sling's first reply is only valid for 80 wire Ultra ATA cables - I doubt that you have them in an old box, standard 40 wire cables must use master/slave.
Put that old drive on the secondary IDE cable as a standalone in a computer that has a CD burner. Disconnect all drives on the secondary to do this. Boot it up and copy the files onto the main drive, shut down, remove the old drive, reconnect the secondary drives, and burn to your heart's content. What's the exact model? It probably does have jumpers, they just may be hard to find, a lot of older drives hid them on the circuit board instead of on the end plate like today's drives. |
