Media Server build

I'm considering building a media server and this is what I would like it to do.

1.) Integrate seamlessly with other stereo components. (i.e. a black case which resembles an A/V component)

2.) Provide storage location for media files (mp3, photos). I'll probably use is as backup for other computers on the home network as well.

3.) Be able to tranfer files from digital camera and mp3 player. (I'm thinking front side USB and firewire ports.)

4.) Use the TV as monitor for photo viewing and mp3 player control.

Currently running winXP on a wired/wireless network.

Can anyone suggest a build?

As for your case this one will look great with your black components if you can afford it:

For Storage I would use two of these drives:

For the TV and remote control video card:

There are a lot of nice media center apps now besides windows media OS I would look at the other choices before making a decision

here's the case I've been eyeing for a similar build

I would get an ATI all-in-wonder for the graphics card.. it includes a tv tuner, and tv out.

and finally get two big drives and set them up in a RAID 0 for super speed.

You won't be able to get windows Media Center Edition though, it's only sold to manufacturers (HP, Dell, Sony)
Although windows XP should be fine until something better comes along.

Take a look at freevo.org and also Linux Toys (a book with several projects) which includes a chapter on building your own media server.

You can get Windows XP Media Center through MSDN if you have a subscription.
