17" LCD Monitor

Hi all,

I'm thinking of purchasing a 17" LCD monitor. What's the best one out there for under $500 right now? I have been looking at Samsung 173T and Sony X73 right now. Are any other good ones out there? TIA.

I just got my daughter a Samsung Syncmaster 170N from Newegg for $419.00. I really like it. Has 450/1 contrast ratio.

Here's the one I'm using and I love it. Check out the warranty and reviews at the home page too. Available at Zipzoomfly for under $400, free second day delivery. 16ms refresh rate, 450:1 contrast ratio and a uniquely designed base. Some folks don't like it cuz it only has 15 pin D-sub connector. No digital.

From what I have been reading the Samsungs seem to be the best out there.

Thanks guys. I guess that I do want to try to get a DVI one this time (I have 15" analog LCD right now). I suppose that would probably narrow the choices down a bit. Thanks again.

Well, since my KVM supports only normal VGA I guess I would have to go with a normal VGA TFT which changes things somewhat. I'm now looking at the Samsung 170N, the NEC 1760V and the Solarism 1730M. Which of these would be the best? The NEC seems to have gotten a lot of positive reviews at newegg, but then again I don't know how good their customer service is. Thanks again.

Compare specs, warranty and price. Get the biggest bang for your buck.

Well specwise the Solarism and NEC are very similar, but the warranty on the NEC is a little better. However, the NEC also costs about $40 more. Hmmm, choices choices Thanks again for the help.

Sam's is selling the NEC 1712 for $389, and it looks pretty decent - the one I saw has zero dead pixels.

My 17" Samsung. like my daughters new one has zero dead pixels. My wifes 17" Envision has 3. But we got it from Staples for $224.00 after rebates.

Or in the case of my wifes, 3 lights that never change color. Only see one of them in day to day use and that is because it is in the taskbar. Shows as avery small white dot in the blue. You see the other two when the PC boots and the screen goes black.

Is this some kind of defect? or LCD are bound to have all this dead pixels? Will it get worrse? That fragile?

Technology is such at this time that a few dead pixels are accepted. Newegg for instance has a policy of only taking a LCD back if it has 8 or more dead pixels.

You don't really notice them unless on is in a screen are that never changes such as the task bar. Viewing movies with DVD or game playing one would never see them.

Then for playing FPS, I would notice something like this on the screen. Is this like the plasma screens, where it burns the image on the screen?

One thing that I don't understand is why LCD are much expansive than CRT? CRT sure is bigger, so more plastic, more sreen, more of everything. What component in the LCD which makes it expansive?

No, they are just dots. They can be always dark, always white, or always one of the 3 colors, depending on what's stuck.

They are more expensive because it's a lot more expensive to make sheets of the LCD material than to make a glass CRT with the electron guns etc.

Whatever you buy, don't go for the IBM. Last Year, I got to trade in my CRT for a a new 15"IBM LCD for about 200 bucks, Cool Huh ? but end up to find out there's a irritating vertical line across the LCD. Initially, I thought, Oh, must be my Graphics card problem. So I lived with it for a few days, until I swapped with another computer, to find out worst, no display ! Then after a few more months, I finally went to ther IBM service centre and was replaced with a 'second-hand LCD'. God, what a nightmare! IBM should'nt mean 'I BLAME MICROSOFT', IBM should blame himself, what a let down for such so call big brand company

When making an LCD everything has to be extremely precise. Each pixel is controlled by a transistor. There are thousands in one screen. If one is bad you will have a dead pixel. LCD's are expensive because of the complexity of the technology. It takes very strict quality control to produce LCD's. Many of them are thrown out at the factory because they have too many dead pixels. That brings up the cost as well.
