Building a Cheap Computer -- Need Help

I am interested in building a cheap AMD based system for Linux/Windows 98. It doesn't have to be fast, I'm building it mainly to learn about building and (maybe) overclocking computers. I'm interested in spending less that $150 (No monitor/Keyboard/Mouse). I really need help selecting a MB and processor, though help with anything would be great.

You get what you pay for. If you can find anything under 150 just buy it. Now if you were looking to spend a couple grand, then picking the right parts would be important.

i don't think you will be able to do that with new quality parts,it would probably take at least $250 for an inexpensive build with quality parts.look at newegg for part pricing they are about as cheap as anyone.

is this going to be a semi-current build, or were you thinking more along the lines of a K6-2?
it may be possible with older components, but if you want anything as current as an athlon with a socket a mobo, then $150 is pushing it.

what components do you need exactly (memory, CPU, mobo, drives)?
and have you checked out the trading forum here?

Well, if you just want a really cheap machine, and you aren't too worried about quality, then you could get an ECS K7S5A Pro for $41 at Newegg, and an OEM AMD 1.6ghz Duron for $39.

You shouldn't need more then a 10gig hard drive for Windows 98/Linux. Get some cheap ram. Any old CDROM will install Windows/Linux for you, and get a cheap old 8mb video card.

A setup like that can easily be had for less then $150.
