I'm trying to install a hardware modem in an old HP pc. It's a Boca Research modem. The directions which I've followed to a *T* say this:
1. Go to Add New Hardware and add a port using the disk supplied with the modem (there's only 1 choice) 2. Make sure the jumpers on the modem are set to the COM PORT and IRQ reported for the new port installed in step 1. (I did this. The port installed on Com2, IRQ3. Com2 is disabled in the bios) 3. Shut down and install the modem in the computer. 4. Add the modem using the control panel. When win95 prompts for the port, select the port that was created in step 1. I do ALL of this exactly, and I still get "Port already Open" when trying to run diagnostics on the modem. I even tried installing both port and modem to different comports. What might be wrong or what other settings might I try? Thanks in advance. Erin |

Set the modem to com 4, IRQ 3 (or any other KNOWN free IRQ).
Restart, and install. |

grrrrrr... won't work, won't work. I go around and around. I'm now trying to install a Diamond Supra Express in this machine. It's a brand new install of windows95b on a 7 year old HP 486 - 50mhz cpu. The Supra comes up with a yellow ! whether I leave it un-jumpered or variously jumpered. I've deleted both com ports in bios OR left 1 or both. It doesn't seem to matter. Any suggestions anyone?

Is your Supra hard jumpered to a port or is it set to plug and play?
Modems hard jumpered to a port need the port installed in device manager. If it's set to plug and play, you do not want the port installed, device mgr. will take care of this. For instance, if you are going to jumper the Supra to Com 2, do not remove com 2 from device mgr. When you jumper it, it's no longer plug and play and you want to add the modem to that port via the "Add Modem Wizard". Then widows will detect it as a "Standard Modem" and you need your driver disk to proceed with the install. Post back and let us know what happens. You'll get it solved, you just need the right settings.

OK. right now it's working. I enabled both com ports in bios. After windows loaded the ports did NOT show up in device mgr. but the modem once more did with the yellow !.
I deleted the modem and then ran the "find new hardware" wizard. After about 10 minutes of grinding it finally found 2 instances of comport. When I told it to install those, it also re-installed the modem cleanly. On reboot however the yellow was back, but the comports were showing in device mgr. I went to the resource tab (of the modem) and changed the configuration to #6. That put the modem on com4,irq7. It seems to like its home there and has stayed through 3 more reboots. I hope the problem is solved. Thanks for the help. erin |
