what kind of mouse is it. Does it need drivers and are the drivers the most current and up to date?

It is a usb off-brand mouse that came with no drivers. I ran a Windows Update and it told me to download the imb mouse software. This same problem is happening to my friends computer. It has a usb optical mouse.

My mouse is not optical and it does have a wheel. My friends mouse is a black IBM usb wheel mouse and is having the same problem with Windows XP Pro.

it might be a usb problem do you have the ps/2 adapter that it came with if it came with one. If you do i would try setting up the mouse thru the ps/2 port and see if that fixes the problem

In control panel, on my system anyway, under mouse properties, motion tab, there is a setting to always select the default selection, when checked it does as you say yours is doing, mine is unchecked. Hope that helps, if not ....
Good luck
