hooking up High speed Cable internet
i'm currently trying to hookup Cable internet in my house. I'm using Comcast btw. I double checked all the cable connections on the computer and everywhere else yet its still not working. The COmcast software is not able to connecto the INternet. It keeps saying to check the coax cable connected to the cable modem but I've checked it and it is secure as well as all wires. Is there anything I should check? anything to be aware of that may be the problem here? It doesn't matter where I connect does it whether I'm up stairs or in the basement does it? THanks!!!

I had the same problem when I first hooked up. What i needed to do what hook everything up, upload the software, then rest the cable modem, by unplugging it for 10sec then plugging it back in and letting it find the connection.

i already called COmcast and they said its the modem. The cable is split once. One cable from the splitter goes to the TV and the other goes directly into the cable modem. The TCPIP is fine. I just echecked it. Comcast said to try different setups but we've tried rearranging the order of the cables yet its still not working. I also tried reseting the modem and that does not help. This **** is pissing me off. Thanks anyway.
EDIT: When connecting the Cable Modem, am I supposed to see a "New Hardware Detected" thing? Cause I didn't and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with my problem. BTW, I'm running XP. Last edited by ACLerok; 03-16-2004 at 03:11 PM. |

Where is it split and what kind of splitter is being used?
Is the coax cable new and not the older less shielded cable. All of these factors can affect your connection. |

there is a short cable connected to the wall and the splitter and then one cable from the splitter goes to the TV and the other to the modem. All of the wires and the splitter came from Comcast so I'm guessing these parts are supposed to work.

I had a cable connection before also. And I was having the same type of problems. The problem for me was a weak signal through the cable. As we are at the end of the cable, the signal was marginal. And I was told that ALL lights have to be on, and NOT blinking. If any were blinking, I couldn't connect. And the signal was so weak, that after about 3.5 weeks later, I was having trouble even getting an IP address. That was when I went DSL, and have been happy since.
You could have the cable company do a check on your line to check the signal strength on the signal coming through the cable. That may be your problem as well. They shouldn't charge you for checking it. And they might also install a signal booster which may help a little or may not. It did me for awhile. But like I said,, in the end I couldn't even get an IP address and went to DSL. This is just a thought. |
